Upgrading Hardware - best practice

Hi, I have a gateway server (CentOS5 + Squid) running since past 2 years. I need to free up the current server and prepare the same setup (CentOS5 + Squid) on a new hardware. I am exploring the short cut option of cloning the HDD and putting in a new server. When the cloned HDD boots in a new h/w environment, the OS will scream for new hardware found. I am sure the OS will then adjust its parameters for the new hardware. But, Is this a good approach ? Are there any stability issues ? Has anyone done this before ? Another approach I thought is to install CentOS5 and then copy only the "/" partition from the old HDD to the new one. Is there any other way of doing this ? What is the best way ? I am just trying to avoid reinstall & reconfigure efforts. I'm just a little worried about the installfest, because the 20 pc's have only CD Rom drives and 256 Mb Ram. I managed to boot to a netinstaller image using PXEboot, but netinstaller wanted to download the files off a mirror, so I still have to look into that. Event Details: A seminar on Pad.ma and Firefox development will be held in Homi Bhabha Centre for Science education, TIFR on 23rd Tuesday evening at 5pm. Pad.ma is a full featured video archival website started as a collaboration between a number of groups (http://pad.ma/about). As a software project, the site uses completely open web and video technologies, significantly, the open source Theora video codec. Pad.ma has pushed the boundaries of what is possible with video on the web - being perhaps the first website to offer time-based annotations, server-side seeking to an arbitrary point in the video, partial clip download, client-side video encoding through the Firefogg browser plugin, alongwith full-text search through the video material. Jan, Sebastian and Sanjay will be talking on Pad.ma. Firefox does not need any Introduction. Mozilla Firefox is getting ready for the new Internet standard HTML 5, and the speakers from Mozilla Foundation will talk on what HTML5 means for the users and developers, what revolution is expected in terms of web applications. Linux alternative to Irfanview

Hello, I was looking up an alternative to IrfanView which is a light weight doze based utility for quick image editing. Found 'showfoto'. It is a cut throat competitor for IrfanView except that it lacks the batch conversion utility that is very handy in Irfanview. However other features are terrific to touch up photos, change brightness contrast etc. The Text tool is also lovely. You can scroll through the font sizes and see the actual result go big and small live. Overall a great piece of software. The best part of it is that I did not find it in google in spite of a reasonable search. It was found in the apt repos of my Lenny, silently awaiting its turn to see the world. -- Regards, Rony. Hi Guys, I do not know if you consider this as an achievement, but Microsoft Word 2007 can open and read all odt files. They have provided a add-in converter. If you have MsOffice on your PC and you double click an odt file, it gets the converter (once only) and installs it in MsOffice I found this when a business associate to whom i send a odt file was able to open it without issues :-) Regards Saswata

Wireless connection problem.

Hi, I am not able to establish wireless connection on my wireless router if I choose "Do not broadcast SSID" setting on the router. I am using Opensuse 11.2 (KDE 4.3.4). Everything works fine if I choose to broadcast SSID, but it doesn't connect if the SSID is not broadcasted. The connection is managed by "NetworkManager". (Just for information, on Windows, by modifying connection settings, one can connect with "Do not broadcast SSID" setting turned on.) On Opensuse+kde-4.3.4, there is no option available with the "KNetworkManager" which allows to make connection when SSID is not broadcasted. I don't know if this is opensuse specific problem, as I haven't tried any other distro for this. From googling I could gather that there is/was such a problem with other Linux distros like Ubuntu too. On a positive note, in a tutorial for wireless connection on linux, there was even this option where one could establish a connection when SSID is not broadcasted. This tutorial was on Fedora. So I guess that this isn't a linux specific problem, but its probably distro specific. Or maybe it could be that I have missed something here. I wonder why I can't find this option with Opensuse 11.2 (KDE - 4.3.4). Have I to install any additional packages? If anybody has any experience in this regard, do let me know. Regards, Rajen.

GRUB issue

hi, I am having a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP. Yesterday i replaced Ubuntu 7.04 with Ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition and updated it. After updating i restarted my machine and the GRUB took unbelievably long time. It took almost 15 mins to load. It was not the same with 7.04. Also before i updated 9.10 the GRUB was fast enough. Now it takes a lot of time to kick in. Any help on this?..as in why its taking so long and how can i work it around?..i dont intend to reinstall the OS.. Regards, Mayur K. Pawar

*Specific issues with version 2.4 of Draft Policy on Open Standards for eGovernance (India)* This document examines the Draft Policy on Open Standards for eGovernment v2.4 dated 25.11.2009 and the process followed in adopting the same. You can download from http://fosscomm.in/OpenStandards . If v2.4 is adopted as official policy, it will result in: 1. The legitimization of proprietary standards that entail the payment of royalty fees and huge foreign exchange outflows. This cost will be paid by Indian taxpayers and pocketed by monopolistic vendors located in foreign countries, since most proprietary standards are controlled by entities outside India. Unlike royaltyfree open standards, the usage of proprietary standards will mean that users will, directly or indirectly, pay a royalty to a private entity for the privilege of communicating with the government. 2. Reduce eGovernment in India to a mess of incompatible systems that cannot communicate with each other, thus defeating the very purpose of eGovernment, if multiple standards for the same purpose are allowed. *Logical inconsistencies in v2.4* This section points out some of the most apparent flaws in v2.4 though it is not an exhaustive list. In particular, we would like to draw attention to the utterly lax manner in which one of the key clauses in section 4.1 titled "Mandatory Characteristics," has been drafted. "4.1.2 The essential patent claims necessary to implement the Identified Standard should preferably be available on a RoyaltyFree (no payment and no restrictions) basis for the life time of the standard. However, if such Standards are not found feasible and in the wider public interest, then RF on Fair, Reasonable and Non Discriminatory terms and conditions (FRAND) or Reasonable and Non Discriminatory terms and conditions (RAND) could be considered." *Inconsistency #1:* The use of a phrase like, "should preferably be available on a RoyaltyFree (no payment and no restrictions) basis," contradicts the title of the section, which is, "Mandatory Characteristics" and makes the usage of the Identified Standard nonbinding. This renders the entire policy meaningless. By wording this clause in such a casual manner, the government is surrendering its policy making responsibilities to market forces that are driven to extract maximum profits from tax payers. * Inconsistency #2: *The government has a serious longterm responsibility of safeguarding its citizens data. Egovernment data remains valid for decades, if not centuries and the archival and preservation of this data is critical. In this context, we would like to point out that v2.4 does not even explain or define "essential patent claims," which is one of the most important terms in this policy. The implementation of a standard cannot be bifurcated into "essential" and nonessential" parts. The policy v2.4 is also silent on how the government will distinguish "essential patent claims" from nonessential patent claims. Egovernment data stored in formats with such unclear rights could be subject to litigation. Therefore, we would like to submit that ALL patent claims on a standard should be made available on a royaltyfree basis so that there are no problems in the foreseeable future. * Procedural issues with v2.4* 1. Apart from these above mentioned inconsistencies, there is also no change log that explains the reasons for introducing new terms in v2.4 and the major directional changes made in this version, as compared to v2.0. 2. It has also been brought to our notice that the expert committee constituted by Department of Information Technology that was involved in drafting this policy since 2007 and was responsible for creating v2.0 that was acclaimed by Civil Society Organizations, was not even informed of the creation and adoption of v2.4. This is a significant disservice to the expert committee Such undemocratic actions will only dissuade public spirited citizens from participating in national policy making processes, especially if these process are marked by lack of transparency and accountability on the part of the government. 3. While Department of Information Technology has invited industry lobbies and trade associations to be part of Apex Committee on Open Standards, it has given no representation to Civil Society Organizations. In fact, the inputs sent in by organizations like National Campaign for People's Right to Information, IT For Change, Center for Internet and Society, Knowledge Commons and others have been completely ignored by Department of Information Technology. *Financial Issues * From an eGovernment perspective, when royaltyfree standards are available, or can be created, it is perfectly rational, economic behavior to opt for such standards. There are very few situations where the government will be able to justify the use of proprietary standards that are controlled by monopolies and entail the payment of huge royalties. Our national data should not be stored in formats that are trade secrets of vendors or controlled by vendors through patents and other forms of protection that enable them to extract royalties and other rents. Furthermore, it has to be recognized that open standards do not preclude anyone from implementing them. If India's egov data is stored in proprietary data formats, the cost of using these formats will grow as we get more and more invested in egovernance. Therefore the government must draw strict rules in favor of open, royaltyfree standards and mandate that ALL stakeholders involved in e Governance adhere strictly to these standards. * Policy issues* As an emerging software superpower, the IT policies formulated in India are closely monitored and emulated. If a poorly worded, logically inconsistent draft like v2.4 becomes national policy, India will be a laughing stock in the community of nations. From a policymaking perspective, the government has repeatedly appealed to educated Indians to contribute to national goals and policy making. However, if software monopolies can so easily defeat policies that are aimed at protecting national interests, this is a serious discouragement to all the public spirited academics and citizens who have volunteered their time and effort to drafting this policy. This will send a strong negative signal to those who wish to contribute to policy making and dissuade them from participating in such policy making processes. I was very happy to note that now Linux has some CAD software which is comparable to the best in the world or eventually going to be there. I was doubly happy to know our public sector was making a contribution in this regard. But my hopes were dashed when i wanted to access the documentation/download page. Looks to be more hype than real. Commercial motivation seems to have gripped the govt babus. This seems to be a software made from open source or GPL softwares in the area of CAD/ERP where linux is weak (with respect to FREE* by cost*softwares) . Yet it is not open source or even its documentation is not available to the lay public. It promises to work with various closed source CAD formats most of which are notoriously un-interchangeable. Can the NIC- national Informatics Centre which is* publicly funded* develop such a software from Free softwares that may be GPLed? and then deny the software or even its documentation to the people of India? Can India ever attain leadership in technology if the govt agencies themselves deny ACCESS to documentation on usage of such CAD/CAM/CAE technologies which have themselves been developed from Free softwares. Unless such cutting edge software is tested/used by an evergrowing number of people, it will remain buggy and enough human resources will not be able to adequately train themselves to use such technologies in an increasingly competitive and superspecialised world. On one hand NIC says it is trying to promote FOSS and on the other hand nicsi etc showcase more of propreitary softwares or run of the mill softwares instead of cutting edge softwares. Nicsi is supposed to be a distributor of this collabcad.com software. Let us not forget that technologies like GRASS etc in terms of GIS technology was open sourced by the US govt's deptt of defense's Corps of Engineers. Paradoxically, this gentleman emails me offline asking us to test *his* financial accounting package. Well,*that* involves downloading close to 30 mb dependency crud, after which we had to perform occult ceremonies with pythons, boas and other snakes in the grass just to get the darn thing to work. We are disinclined to waste productive time with installation arcana. We want work done, and do not spend all day trolling in mailing lists. Is there a .deb we can pick up somewhere? And yes, I would consider contact with the developer *is* essential. Mailing lists (like this one?) are rude and take a high-handed stand with genuine offers to help. Proprietary software people are more polite, less arrogant. Tally is working just fine. You want support from professionals? Come half way down the bridge first. I've had my say. I have contacted the GNUKhata dev team, and hope to get a reply. I would not have posted to this mailing list again, but unfortunately, the GNUKhata deb was unavailable from the notified download location. Suhit Kelkar

List, I have been trying to search on reading an image file via C. I haven't been able to find code without libraries. However, being aware of the 'binary' mode in Windows (Turbo C++), I had read it using fopen, fread and fseek to read the header and then the contents. However, this reading was done reading individual bytes and not reading it using structures. Apologies, ahead, because, I suspect I may be using wrong 'terms' or may have some incorrect information. (Correct me, thanks) For example, a .bmp (grayscale image) file has first 54 bytes as header (IIRC, correct me, if I'm wrong). Somewhere within that, there's the height and width of the image. Following the 54 bytes are the pieces of image data containing integers between 0 - 255 representing grayscale colors. This seemed to work in Windows because I could see the results. Now, I do know that there are libraries that make this task easier in various distributions of Linux but the purpose (or requirements, If I may say) here it to read it in the same way as it was done in Windows. Though I also do see 'b' mode in the manual page of 'man fread', but I'm doubtful about the results. If anyone has tried to read an image file or has good sample code that I can lookup, would like to have links to it. Alternately, if someone can put in a few details regarding this in a little more 'easy-to-understand' way, that would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any help. -- Roshan Baladhanvi

When I close the browser, can the firewall be closed automatically? No need for the firewall when I am not browsing the internet, as I do not have an always-on connection. Hello, I have to setup an smtp server for a small office and I have zeroed in on postfix. I am going through the docs online but can't find the parameter that allows the sending of mails only to addresses listed in a whitelist type file. This is the peculiar requirement for the customer that emails can be sent outside the office, only to email addresses listed in a file. Do not buy BenQ U121 netbook (linux edition)

Dear all, Recently , I have purchased BenQ U121 netbook. I have BenQ U121 eco netbook comes with linpus linux version. but I have tested it well that its wifi does not work at all with Ubuntu 9.10 and UNR . I have tried full effort to install fedora 12 (using USB, using netboot, etc ) but It will not boot fedora atall. also speed is not promising. [OT/HW] CPU/System fans turn on but no video

I have bought an Intel Media series board DG45ID. I installed a Pentium D (775 socket) with a Corsair 2GB DDR2 (800 Mhz) mem. stick (in working condition from another system), connected a LCD monitor to the DVI port. The on-board green LED comes on when I connect the SMPS to the board. When I boot, the cpu fan turns on but there is no video at all. I don't get any beep codes either. I have put in PCI-e video card thinking the on-board video is bad. Same problem - no video, no beep code. I have swapped the mem. stick but the problem persists. The above testing done with only the bare minimum installed i.e. SMPS, CPU, Memory installed on the board. I have checked Intel web site for cpu compatibility and my cpu is listed there. I have come across DoA boards in wherein the board is simply dead - nothing comes works when powered ON. What could be the problem; the cpu or the board? Thanks for your help. Regards, -- Arun Khan

Display and Netork problem

Linuxers, I am on Debian Lenny, and have a Compaq laptop with Nvidia chipset and networking. I have a DSL wifi router at home which has WPA2/WPA1 security enabled and it is working fine The problem I face is that the nvidia graphics card is only getting configured on kernel 2.6.26.and the wpa_supplicant does not connect to the router. On the other hand on kernel 2.6.30 the wpa_supplicant is connecting properly and nvidia graphics card is not supported. As in on kernel 2.6.30: 1. There is no nvidia-kernel module and I have tried the module-assistant method and it is not working. 2. On Sid. as soon as I install nvidia-glx the entire xserver binary files are removed. I do not want to do a manual compile as then I will have to manually do the upgrades always. All I want to know is any pointers in configuration that may need to be done. hi All, I am new in Linux world. I have just purchased the tata's SCX-1080 USB internet data card, but unable to access internet. I have Debian at home, so my question is how can this USB internet data card work on Debian????? In old version there is wvdial.conf file which contains the require information to work internet on linux. but in newer version of Debian Lenny I cannot see that file. How to install wvdial in Debain or newer version of Linux without internet connection if there is any way to do that? I have also tried dpkg -i wvdial .deb packeage, but it's not working. I have also checked the fstab and log file, pc cannot detect the data card. How can I over come from this problem? Please help...I need to sort out this as soon as possibel... I use ubuntu 9.04. Of late the autodetection feature/setting to detect usb pendrives has changed in my computer's configuration. Now if i insert the pendrive in the usb slot, it does not detect it. I have to restart the computer to detect the pendrives. which configuration file needs to be edited/changed for the autodetect feature to work again? Kussh

Mail attachment problem

Hi I am using squid 2.5 transparent proxy with IPTables. My network setting is as follows: MTNL router -> Linux Box (Squid, IPTables) -> LAN I have done masquerade on my linux box and everything works fine, expect this one problem. While composing mail, when I try doing an attachment, it takes very long and finally fails, even if it is a very small attachmet e.g. 1mb text file. I have even tried tcpmss to 1460, but no luck. Making linux well supported among vendors/manufacturers

The mobile market will exceed the computer market in coming years or has already exceeded the computer and related gadgets market. Nokia and other manufacturers routinely make softwares for their hardware products for the windows and macintosh operating systems. Unless we, the FOSS users request them every now and then thru email, feedback on their websites, online forums etc etc to also support these softwares on the linux platform, Linux will get increasingly sidelined and less people will even come to know about it. Getting linux on the printed packaging of a product (visibility) is very important for awareness generation. 95% of the battle of getting linux popular will be won if it becomes visible to the layman. I request FOSS users to constantly strive to make linux visible to laymen thru whatever creative ideas they have, every now and then, specially thru requests to manufacturers etc and online forums. HP K209a installed on Debian 5 (Lenny)

Hello, Just finished installing the HP K209a PSC (with economy cartridges) in Lenny. Went to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and after entering the proper details of the OS, it confirmed that I had to download the package. All instructions are on the site with screenshots. However after a successful package install (select the custom options and choose yes to un-install the older hplip package) , neither the printer or scanner got detected. The user (me) was added to the lp, saned and lpadmin groups and viola the printer and scanner was detected. For some reason the HP utility does not start from the KDE menu. One has to open a gui terminal and type hp-setup. On doing hp- and tab twice you get a lot of utility options. Using the hp gui itself the printer was installed. Kooka detected my scanner and I was scanning away. If anyone wants to have a better utility, I found one in my apt-cache. It is called 'quteinsane' and it is a frontend for sane. Need help in deciding HDD for Samba Server..

Hi, I am using Dual CPU AMD Opteron2378 with Sata harddrive with 32MB cache for Samba File Server. I have installed CentOS5.3 64bit on it. Currently 80 users are using that server at same time. All users are using OpenOffice, Write, Pagemaker on their desktop machines and they work on server directly. It gives good performance. There are 10 users who use CorelDraw & Photoshop for their work and they work locally. Now I put their data on server told them to work on Server directly. But it reduced their working speed by 50% than locally and on server DiskIOs also got increased. So then I disconnected all users and only provide access to those 10 users. So they are working on the server dedicatedly but still performance was slower than local. Query : How can I increase Performance for them ? what configuration I should have to serve those users as a File Server ? Note: All network cables are CAT6 and switches are of 100MBs. Query: If HDD is the weakpoint then, will SAS hdd be helpful under these circumstances? I heard that SAS HDD are faster that Sata. They have 2 catagories 3Gb/s and 6 Gb/s. Even we can get PCIxpress card for SAS ports from Promise. Can Linux supports these cards? Thanks in advance Regards Neelesh

Any good download managers

Hi all, I tried downloading the HUGE collabcad PLM setup file from collabcad website. However both times though I was able to download the 1.62GB file using firefox addon downthemall, downthemall failed to finally put the file in the proper download folder given for the purpose. Only 750mb file resulted from a FULL download of 1.62 GB. There was enough space in the /home directory -so that possibility of less space is ruled out. I think downthemall 1 downloads to a temporary or hidden directory and 2 then checksums the hidden directory download after the download is complete and 3 then moves the checksummed file to the final destination under /home directory if everything is ok or gives an error. It seems to be restricted in download size upto 750MB. Am looking for a better dowload manager which can work under ubuntu 9.04 and with such SUPER large files. If anyone knows of a better manager with checksumming ability pls let me know. The other option is using a torrent file (via a bittorrent client) if any exists. Thanks for any help Kussh

@Kartik i know that but you are not getting the question. I had installed kde4.2.2 when kde 4.3 was just about to come....But after when it came , Synaptics or apt didn't upgrade 4.2 to 4.3..even on manual checking of update , they said 'your kde packages are uptodate' and thats with others too.. So, I wanted to know the reason behind this... As if canonical is still not supportng 4.3 in jaunty or anything else... My question is WHY not HOW (first step is Googling always)...Why it is not included in original repo list Similar case is with firefox update too, it is not giving option of updating to 3.5. The problem is that after so much of realease of kde 4.3 , it is still not updating it or giving me an an option to do.. Hello, Whenever you face a problem with software or hardware in Linux, before you post your message to the list, follow some simple practices that may help you solve the problem on your own. Firstly, imagine yourself as a service provider who is on-site at the client's place and except for a working internet connection, you have no other resources available to seek help for your problem. All phones are dead, your mobile battery is out of charge, and the list members have retired for the day so you will not get any help for 24 hours. With these limitations you have to solve the problem in the same visit. Crosscheck:- This is a very powerful yet simple method to start isolating possible faulty conditions. If you have a piece of hardware that is not working on your system, try this hardware on another system or try another hardware on the same system. If you have software ( and hardware ) related problems then search google for people who have had similar problems with the same software. Nowadays every major Linux distro has its own guide / instructions / blogs pages for setting it up on popularly available branded hardware like laptops, netbooks etc. You simply need to put in the correct 'key words' in google to look for answers to your queries. Therefore, if you bought a new laptop or netbook and cannot get its sound or LAN or wireless or camera or card-reader etc. working, look for websites that have full instructions on how to install your choice of distro on that particular model of hardware. Remember the fact that we are a little behind in technology so before us someone else has already faced this problem and all we need to do is look out for that person on google. Only after you have exhausted all your resources on google, should you post a message on this list. jerkiness in video on using phonon on windows

Hi, We are subclassing QIODevice to pass audio-video data to a custom parser (a Directshow filter implementation) using Phonon. Phonon creates a graph that includes the custom parser and corresponding audio-video decoders and rendering filters. The custom parser internally separates audio and video, which is then decoded and rendered. When this sequence is played, jerkiness is observed periodically (spaced every 2-3 seconds). By video jerkiness, I mean that previous frame is again rendered causing a break in continuous viewing. It is important to note that there is no break in audio. When the same file with the custom format is drag-n-dropped in to Graphedit, it automatically creates a pipeline and renders audio-video data satisfactorily (meaning no jerkiness and in audio-video synchronization). From this, we have concluded that the directshow filters by themselves do not have any bug and perform correctly. We are unable to figure out why this behaviour is observed on using phonon in windows. Any help/suggestions in this matter will be appreciated. Thanks. Kunal

Youtelecom broadband on linux

Hi guys, I had set up my dad's laptop running Ubuntu to connect to Youtelecom broadband using pppoe. Everything has been running fine for many years and suddenly on Saturday it stopped working. It connects to the net and immediately disconnects. The Youtelecom support guys are unable to help as none of them know anything about linux and I'm on the other side of the world so unless he can actually connect to the Internet, there's nothing much I can do to debug the issue. I wanted to know if anyone else is on youtelecom and has seen this problem in the last few days. Any suggestions will help. Thanks, Philip -- hello world

external drive problem in ubuntu

Am using ubuntu 9.04 on a desktop. Have also tried with ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10. System is unable to detect and connect to a USB external drive--make is seagate, capacity is 250 GB, model is called freeagent. Have also tried the device in windows7 where it is also not detected. The external drive can be felt to be running as its whirring sound can be felt. Also it glows from the top due to some LEDs which shine thru holes on the top of the drive's cover. There is only one USB connector cable which acts both as a power supply cable and a data cable. Generally USB devices when plugged in are detected instantly but this is not the case here. I have also installed pmount etc without any success. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Kussh

@RS singh is there any problem with your internet connection? check out your system's network proxy.. If you are behind an ISA proxy then you might have to use NTLMAPS for requesting net access for your linux applications. Moreover, if you can't find apache2 , better option is to install it via automated process. try following: sudo tasksel then choose LAMP from the list and hit OK.. it will install Apache with all dependencies and configurations. Hi, I have a dual boot machine..running Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04..Having trouble in mounting a 20 GB NTFS partition in Ubuntu 8.04. I have other partitions which are Fat32 partitions and easily mounting. Tried googling the issue and also used NTFS-config tool..It gave me an error saying Windows was not shut down cleanly..and asked me to remove any drives connected..after using ntfs-config i changed the mount point name..it again gave me the same error..and then said i didnt have privileges to mount the partition..please help me with the same..i do not intend to format the partition since i am having a lot of data here.. please help me with the issue.. thanx... Good day list members, In my search for a notebook with a CPU that supports either Intel-VT or AMD-V, the list has narrowed down to: a) Acer 5542 (AMD Athlon M300) b) Acer 3810T (Intel SU3500 ULV) Even though the CPU supports VT, the BIOS may be b0rked by the manufacturer (i.e no VT setting as in a brand name starting with V...) I would appreciate feedback/comment from anyone who has used either of the above models and verified that VT can be enabled through BIOS and that the kernel loads the respective KVM modules. Hello All, Knoppix 6.2 is going to release soon.Before that they are looking for the translations of index.html (basic introduction about knoppix) in all possible languages.One of my firend is taken care of Hindi.Anybody else interested in other languages pls in touch with knopper. debian-knoppix(a)knopper.net .I will provide the index.html file offlist. ---- Knoppix 6.2 is now ready for uploading, but as a last, tiny missing detail, I would like to re-add the short and (outside of the compressed image) "windows-readable" information that was present on Knoppix versions prior to 6.0. I have the german and english version ready (it's really not much text, just the basic info), but would like to bring the other languages into sync with the updated text again, too. I could need a little help here. This just applies to index_en.html, the cheatcodes should still be OK if they just stay in english (or not?). Whoever is reading this list and would like to provide a translation for his or her language, is cordially invited to do so. The text license is Creative Commons unrestricted distribution with Modifications Allowed (also for derivates). You can add your name as translator below the title, maybe with a contact email address, if you like to do so. To avoid duplicate work, please post the translated html, or at least a preliminary "working on it [language]" to the list. The translations present in Knoppix 5.3 were: DK ES FR IT JP NL RU but other languages are welcome, too, of course. nokia n70 and wammu 0.29

I have been unable to extract information--phonebook, sms messages, received/missed/called numbers logs from my Nokia N70 using wammu 0.29 on ubuntu 9.04 using the ca53 USB cable inspite of the wammu.eu site mentioning that the N70 phone is accessible/supported thru wammu. The wammu software detects the device but is unable to extract the data from it. If anybody has experience with the software or something similar in ubunntu, pls let me know. xGnokii, gmobilemedia and kmobiletools have been unable to access the phone even. only wammu has been able to access it using connection=at115200 and port=/dev/ttyACM0 Nokia pcsuite does not work properly under wine in ubuntu. [OT] Shell accounts and payment from India

Hi, This isn't related to linux as such, but since we are all geeks, I thought people might no the answer. I'm currently looking for shell accounts and web hosting. I am ready to pay, but all hosts in Europe/USA accept payment via Bank transfer. Now from what research I've done it's not worth sending money out of India due to the bureaucratic hurdles. As for Paypal, that requires a credit card, but I only have a debit card. Does anyone here use webhosts outside India, or say VPSes. What do you do then? Is there any good provider of a shell account/VPS in india which will allow me to run a SOCKS proxy using SSH? It will be purely for personal use. That way I can pay within India. Nikhil

LG LXU 800 CDMA Modem under fedora

Hi, I have started using The Reliance LG LXU800 modem for their NetConnect service. I have used it under MS Windows as of now. They provide Linux driver for kernel 2.6.27-7-generic specifically on the CD which came with the modem. It did not load with the linux kernel 2.6.30.8-64.fc11 which I have on my laptop. Search on the Internet only advised me to change to that particular kernel. Can anyone provide links or information on how to make this work under the present kernel and later under the updates which will be coming. I would also like to know if this can be used on a Asus EEEPC 4G. Thanks and regards. sadhu

@steve well, thanks for reminding but I know it is based on Wine. But for playing games in linux using Wine with default drivers, you have to do hell lot of tweaking and config settings.PlayOnLinux does all that for you. So no bubbles are there to prick :) thanks Pratik Anand

We all know that Windows games don't run on Linux. Most of them don't even have linux ports. Many people even advanced linux users keep windows partition just to play games. Wine even doesn't help much as it slows down the system. Even worse case with virtualizations (like VirtualBox). [commercial] OnSite help with 2 HDD - VolGroup issues

Hi, I have an IBM server with 2 identical disks -- SATA 250GB. I have installed CentOS 5.3 on both the disks. I want to keep both the disks connected in the server, Boot from Disk-1 and run a full disk RSync every night. The problem is, the 2nd HDD won't mount because of identical VolGroup names and related issues. Need to change the VolumeGroup of both HDDs and look at other related issues. End result, I need to be able to boot from HDD1, mound HDD2 and rsync. In case of HDD1 failure, HDD2 should be able to work as the main disk. I know this is similar to RAID and raid is an option, but I have my reasons for doing it this way. Looking for someone who can help me ? Let me know. Thx & Regards, Sandeep 98199-88384

But if you have a good familiarity on Linux Servers, a very different market can be explored which has a huge demand (the Open Source Telecommunications market) especially after a lot of new Telco and VAS players coming in the market, the need for Asterisk Training and Certification has risen up to quite a good extent. All these new generation VAS companies require prior work expereince on Asterisk or Certification which can assure them on the expertise, and hence my recommendation on doing an Asterisk course along with Official Digium Certified Asterisk Professional (dCAP) would raise the bar and eventually help candidates land into a better paying jobs within India itself. Nevertheless It may sound like blowing our own trumpet, if any candidate is looking to explore better probablity in landing up a job, they can consider actively looking at an Asterisk Training n Certification course to get them booted into the VAST Open Source Telecommunications market not only in India but world wide. If possible get an MTNL connection with a static I.P Address (that is what I use these days), It took me just 1 day to get the Static I.P Address assigned (for the TriBand 256 Unlimited Downloads scheme) from the MTNL Vashi Office. The Modus operandi to get the Static I.P Address assigned within a day is to visit the MTNL office and request them (read pester) very very very very politely till they give you one. And you know Bingo it works!!!!! The whole process of setting this home lab and configuring the Hardware and Software itself would make you more than competent to handle the North American Linux Vendor's exam and most importantly will give you hands on experience with basic GNU/Linux Systems and Network Administration. CBT tutorials are good but nothing beats setting up the lab yourself. ps:- I am a practicing Senior GNU/Linux Systems Administrator and I do use Cent0S 5.3 at my work place and also on my personal laptop these days and have been using various GNU/Linux distributions for close to 7+ years including the North American Vendor's offerings. As part of our curriculum at DA-IICT ( http://www.daiict.ac.in ) we are required to do a rural internship ( ie. work with an NGO and contribute to society in some way ). Now I really want to do this well, so I figured if I could find a place where I could work with technologies I'm passionate about, that would be the best. So I'm really hoping to find some organisation which uses FOSS extensively in its day to day activities and could use another hand. squid failover using RHCS

Hi guys, I have configured squid server on two nodes. my requirement is to have a squid failover using RHCS. RHCS is also configured with a virtual ip monitoring both the servers. virtual ip :- 192.168.1.100 Now the issue is that my virtual ip is configured on all browsers with port 8080 for proxy purpose. ie:192.168.1.100:8080 now the request coming from browsers with virtual ip and port number 8080 are properly directed to a active server but the request going out from the active squid server doesn't takes virtual ip it takes its on eth0 ip ie:192.168.1.1 of Active server and hits firewall due to which firewall blocks the ip and hence no page is displayed. so what i have did was i have configured iptables postrouting which nats all the outgoing request from eth0 to virtual ip. #iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.1.1 -o eth0 -j SNAT --to- 192.168.1.100 After this rule am able to receive web pages. but cluster doesn't works at all. what i mean is if i try to shutdown active server the virtual ip doesn't shifts to passive server. note:- before applying iptables the cluster works fine but cat get webpages as mention earlies. please help guys if any body have any solution or have configured RHCS for the same. -- Regards Advait Raut

seeking suggestion for file system ext3/xfs/reiserfs on 6/4TB disk arrays

If you have been managing Linux filesystems on large disk arrays, I would like to hear your experience/advice on what filesystem you have selected (ext3/xfs/reiserfs/jfs). My main concern with XFS is that fsck.xfs is basically a shell script that always returns success. The utility that does the real check, runs only in single user mode otherwise it complaints "out of memory" (4GB RAM with Dual Xeon 2.0Ghz CPUs). I tried it once on the 4TB fs. It ran for over the weekend and it was still running come Monday morning when I had kill the process and bring the file server back on line for end users. I would appreciate your personal experiences with any of the above fs on TB/PB scale. <background> I have under my administration a file server with two arrays 6TB and 4TB. The consultant prior to me had formatted both the arrays with XFS fs. The client was experiencing frequent disconnects between client stations and the file server - lately it could be resolved only with a system reboot and not just a restart of the NFS server. I tried NFS tuning (increase server threads, rsize, wsize etc.) on the server as well as the client but not much improvement. To resolve finger pointing between hardware and OS/software we asked the hardware vendor to re-certify all the components in the arrays as well as the header. In this process they have cleaned up both disk arrays and we have to start afresh. (I do have backups of the data in two places). </background> Thanks for your time and advice. Regards, -- Arun Khan

Hello, In Firefox there is a plugin https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006 called downloadhelper http://www.downloadhelper.net/ Just install this firefox plugin and ensure that you have the ffmpeg package installed through your distro's package manager. When you play the video in youtube you will an animated tool icon next to the address bar. It will allow you directly download and convert the video to your customised format, even mp3 for sound only. In the Tools -> DownloadHelper menu there is a 'preferences' section. Thats where you first set all your custom preferences and once you are set, simply click on the drop down list of the animated tool icon and select a download video format, it will open another submenu that has options like 'download', 'download and convert' etc. Thats it. Ext3 Issues

Hello, I had installed a 250 GB SATA drive in my system using a PCI to SATA card. It had 3 partitions. One small primary partition with NTFS and the remaining extended partition with 2 equal and large ext3 logical partitions. Suddenly one day I got ext3 errors while booting and the 2 ext3 partitions would not mount. Both had bad superblocks. One partition with important data could be recovered using e2fsck but the other had a very bad superblock so I finally formatted it again with ext3. The primary NTFS partition was ok all the time. What are the possible causes for this sudden busting of superblocks? The bad blocks check did not reveal any bad blocks so that part was ok. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux !
