Mani will be going to Cochin Free Soft Conference.

Hi, In a bit of a hurry. Our request for a stall for putting up Mani's GIMP paintings and discussing the issue of slums has been accepted by the organisers of the Kochi Conference on free software Mani and the enteprising kids from the community managed to print and frame 35 paintings in last 2 days. Mani is beaming with joy and enterprise - it will be hist first trip to Kochi. What wonders can "Free Software, Free Hardware " do. Some of us have had the chance to help them in a small way and feel its a honour to accompany him to the conference. Thanks profusely all those who have helped the kids. -S p.s: however the computer center itself has a long way to go : need hardware help - frequent maintenance issues, lack of gnu/linx syllabus and exercises , creative teacher guides who can make learning more interesting is still a need. http://slumdweller.wikispaces.com

Hi all As part of GNU's 25th anniversary celebration , we are organizing few events 1. Translating Selected Essay of RMS in kannada Language. 2. GNU / Linux Installation Fest. 3. A small party ( cutting cake + other snacks ) I welcome all for this celebration -- interested ones can confirm here itself. For Event 1 . RMS talk at IISc

Dear All, Sorry for the clutter. let me make things clear. 1) Do we have a confirmation on the RMS talk at IISc - on 'Patents' [ given the current context of " "IP" " Cell Promotion at IISc ] and the prominence 'software patent' is gathering in india - RMS to be communicated about this . 2) If we have confirmation asap then it will help us work better for the event. If not we will wait . I had a initial request but didnt proceed as I dont have a confirmation. 3) I propose that we have Fsug and IISc ( the exact department and so on to be communicated later ) as organisers as Dr. Nagarjuna suggested- of course supporting organisations can put up their support banners - and - we will try to make it as broad based as possible and focus attention on IISc . 4) I am aksing whomever i know including iisc students to join the list 5) we should also not miss any free software supporter in iisc and include them in the effort - they might be quite senior and we might not know them.. 6) yes bms is definitely an inspiration thanks senthil

weighted queues

Hi, I saw that a queue has been made for RMS visit requests. Thats logical and algorithimic. http://bangalore.gnu.org.in/index.php/Events:RMS_visit_to_Bangalore#Queu e However I would like to give a critical review comment on the design of the queue ;) . The queue looks like it is FIFO ( first in first out). But FIFO doesnt always work. At times we need weighted queues for the effective functioning of the system. The current queue : "talk in BMS College of Engineering <---talk in IISc/IIM <----Interaction with Kannada Bloggers (would be clubbed with other confirmed event) " We would like to add the following weights to this element in the queue "Talk at IISc" : Weight 1 : anivar said its a good topic Weight 2 : from prof k gopinath from IISc : "I think a big issue now in free software is network/web services and GPL (often called the "ASP loophole"). The Affero GPLv3 addresses this issue. Since this is not well known, I think asking him to talk about this as well as patents/copyrights/... will be useful." I also pointed him to our discussion page and requested him to give detailed advice directly. thanks Senthil I couldn't figure out where I could submit a comment, so I am sending it to you. Can you add it to the appropriate location/guide me? "Software patents are an important issue in India right now because there is a heated debate over how to interpret Section 3(k) which says that, "A mathematical or business method or a computer programme per se or algorithms are not patentable." How "computer programme per se" is interpreted is of vital importance to the FOSS community. Therefore a talk by RMS on software patents would be relevant at this point in time and would help raise awareness of how patents prevent independent invention and restrict the freedom of software developers." Uncorkers Group For Free Software Develpers

Hi all, Being a hacker and a die hard fan of the Free Software Philosophy. I've come to know that it is quite hard to get someone join your coding project and to find a project which you can be an active part of (meaning not being just an SVN committor for minor changes). So I have started this group of coders who are willing to write free code. It is inspired by Apache Software foundation's success with the philosophy. The group, which i have named "uncorkers" (which means people who "free" the wine from the bottle), upholds the same prehistoric philosophy of mutual help and working for the common good. For the question "what is the loss if you aren't part of this community (or one like this)" there is no answer (I mean the answer is nothing), but it only shows that you want to share more if you join! Speaking of the technical advantages, You can start your projects here (or as a team) letting the other coders follow the progress of code from the beginning and thus helping more efficient, bugless and easy hacks. Since this is the founding stage, you can be a founding father of a great organization in the making. Since RMS's schedule is extended i hope he can accomodate BMS now (need to cross check with him) Madu & santhosh, please Confirm BMS event under the joint banner with FSUG, RV, Christ & BMS and update wiki.
