Free Software Talk by Abhas - 7 June 2008 ------------------------------------------ The talk was presented by Abhas Abhinav, CEO, Deeproot Linux, a free software based Company in Bangalore. For a person who is new to free software movement, the talk may seem philosophical for sometime. However, the very presenter being a successful entrepreneur already in free software business, that held the interest levels intact. The initial slides talk about the background of free software, why free software and what free software is all about. Even though one of the listeners wanted to jump to knowing about business ideas using free software, Abhas's commitment to educate on principles of free software business was appreciable. My idea on attending this talk too was about knowing at least handful of business ideas using free software. But as the presentation goes by one could realize that the session's objective was to educate on the model of doing free software business and not about discussing business ideas as such. May be it was only my expectation that was wrong. The session helps us realize how we are restricting our freedom and hence our knowledge in this proprietary software business model. Abhas was candid about making us realize how much $$$ he may lose if someone adopts his idea and sells an improved product next door. But this is what a free software principle is all about. To be a successful entrepreneur in this, he emphasizes the importance of 'Value' that you attach to your product which wins. He says the value that you give in terms of support and services that stands a differentiator between you and your competitors. It may be true that proprietary software business can make you more rich than your FSB counterpart. But the knowledge you spread around by distributing your source and helping the community to build upon that is a greater achievement. This liberation of mind is what is essential to be a committed free software follower and a FSB Entrepreneur as well. Hence they say, "Free software is not about price but about freedom. Think 'Free' as in free speech and not free beer". ----

To add few more lines to the previous mail, The session talked about the business model also. Money can be earned using free software by charging for the services, making maintenance contracts, customization, localization & upgrades. Abhas mentioned an important business point in the model where we need to be careful about is that maintenance contract should be for the released version of the software and should not cover the defects due to additional changes made by the customer to the software. GNU ifconfig & IPv6

I am looking for a portable way to read the IPv6 address of a network interface when its name is given. This is mainly needed to add some functionality to GNU ifconfig [1] and while looking around came across the USAGI FAQ [2], which says that SIOCGIFADDR does not work with IPv6 although it does for IPv4. Therefore variants of programs like this [3] do not work for IPv6. I also found that the variant of ifconfig provided by net-tools [4] parses files within /proc/net to read the information instead of using ioctl commands. Another option seems to be to use SIOCGIFCONF, to read all the available interfaces in a linked list [5]. Now both these options seem problematic to me. Firstly /proc/net/ does not seem to exist on GNU/Hurd [6] and NetBSD [7], while I do not want to read all the interfaces when all I want is the IPv6 address of a specific interface. What do you suggest? Hi, Balaji will write a more detailed report . He wrote a quick thing as he is travelling "After several attempts I couldn't get hold of a camera and couldn't get the photo of the session. But, here is what I have say about the session. Abhas started at around 2:35pm and discussion went on till 4pm till we are thrown out of the room. So, it went on very interactively . Abhas went through users perspective and developers perspective of free software and built the argument slowly on why software business should be on free software and we should have more such companies in this country. He also mentioned about the success of Deeproot and how Deeproot operates with Free software. Abhas, Can you share your presentation that you used with us? People at Sun also asked for it." -balaji
