Kubuntu 8.10 on LG X110 [Installation Report]

Hello, Today Kubuntu 8.10 was installed on the LG X110 netbook. Unlike Acer which has no recovery CD and uses a 20 GB hidden partition, LG's X110 comes with driver CDs and there is only one partition of 160 GB that's installed with Doze XP home. A Moserbayer DVD writer temporarily plugged into an external USB IDE HDD adapter was used as the external USB CD drive. After booting flawlessly into the Live session of Kubuntu 8.10, installation is pretty simple. When you come to the partitioning part, it stops at the first option to partition the disk 50-50 for Doze and Linux. Select your option and the rest of the installation is automatic. If you choose 50-50 then the first time you boot into Dose post installation, you will get a file system error and the scandisk option will pop up. Do not bypass it. Let it happen and it will restart the system after correcting the disk space entries. After that the system boots into doze normally. After installation run 'sudo apt-get update' and install multimedia support with 'sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras'. It is better to run this command in a terminal or gui terminal like konsole as the Java license agreement choices cannot be navigated properly through a GUI package manager like Adept, Synaptec etc. It will hang there. To add firefox3, simply use 'sudo apt-get install firefox'. Please note that Firefox 3 is a gnome package and it will download a bulk of gnome based support packages. For the webcam interface use 'sudo apt-get install luvcview' Luvcview is a nice software but the gui needs a little getting used to. Pictures clicked are good and in a raw format. You can later convert them into your favorite format. It does video recording too. While the Realtek LAN is up automatically, the Realtek wireless drivers need to be installed and that is done from this site http://julienpecqueur.com/tutoriaux/install_driverwifi.html The site is in French but the commands to be executed are in English so simply copy/paste them into a terminal. Remember, the 'uname -r' is to be replaced by the actual output of 'uname'r'. So do that first and make a note of it. Download the tarball and untar it using 'tar xzvf rtl8187se_linux_26.1023.0928.2008.tar.gz' then go ahead with the rest of the instructions. Basically you download the builder packages and build the drivers from the tarball. Then you save the modules into the respective locations. Bluetooth is still a gray area and hopefully it will get resolved soon. What is surprising is that peripherials like BT, Camera, Cardreader etc. do not show up in lspci. I will see if the output can be posted to the list. Maybe there is a patch in the Doze side to get these devices detected. Anyway the system is now up and running with Kubuntu 8.10 with LAN and Wireless support and Camera. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! No Viruses No Spyware Only Freedom.

When I said my comp crashed I meant that when I "hit the button" all that happened was that the power led glowed - no display and no led even for the hard disk. However, it turned out that is was more my hopes that had crashed. The BIOS had got corrupted and a call to Acer helpline fixed that. The comp is up and about again. BTW +1 from me. Sanjay

connecting to gmail via imap over squid

Hi All, I'm using squid3.0 as our proxy server to serve the internet users, which is working fine. Now I want users to access IMAP(say gmail on imap) over my proxy. Can anyone let me know, How do I do this? Is there any way I can do it with squid? Is there any other way? So far what I've read on google is, as squid is an http proxy, it only supports http/ftp protocol. not fully for even https. Hello, This is just for everyones' information that more manufacturers have jumped into the netbook bandwagon and one such model is from LG. A client of mine bought it from Vijay Sales for 19K. Specs:- LG X110 10" screen 1.2 Kgs 2.5+ Hr batter life Atom Processor 945 Mobo 1 GB RAM 160 GB HDD 1.3 MP camera 3 USB 1 VGA LAN and Wireless (lspci showed them as Realtek devices and the wireless was not detected by Lenny Live) Bluetooth One MM card slot Speakers. Mic and H/P sockets Preloaded with doze home edition I found the screen to very bright but the camera was darkish, compared to the Aspire One. Dear All, I finally found this piece of information at the http://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne site. It says : Note Kernel 2.6.27-11 breaks the wired ethernet interface. Bug 313866 has been verified: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/313866 Add to the information to help. Revert to an earlier kernel to fix the wired interface for now. However, I managed to crash my laptop while trying out various ways to fix the problem. I am told by the Acer people that it is probably only a corruption of the BIOS and will have to start from putting in a new BIOS. But when I have my Kubuntu intrepid up, I will remember to revert to an earlier version of the kernel. Hope this helps others who have the Acer Aspire One. Regards, Sanjay Singhvi

Hello all, I intended to hold a demonstration and installfest of Ubuntu a few months ago,which didn't work out because the projector was unavailable.I plan to do the fest again,this time successfully, on 27th and 28th Feb,with the demo on 27th and installfest on 28th respectively.My (more) fleshed out plan follows,please tell me what you think of it. :) Demonstration: On 27th,I plan to set up 4-5 machines with Ubuntu 8.04[LTS] installed with eye candy and requisite non-free codecs and to attract people with compiz effects and natural curiosity and explain to them the various replacements for applications they use on Windows(TM).As Mehul has helpfully provided,we need to show them reasons to switch,which will be parallels for the applications they use on Windows(TM) Explain the features vis-a-vis Windows,career possibilities and use of GNU/Linux in universities and companies abroad.We organize an install fest next day for those interested. Installfest: I have 28 odd Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit CDs.I plan to install for those who bring their boxes and hand them a CD.If people can't bring their machines,ask them to check out the installation procedure,and hand out CDs. Also,planning to provide Fedora 10 installs for those who wish to try out a different distro. If I run out of CDs,I ask them [previous day]to bring their flash stick and create a bootable image on them,provided their boxes have USB boot capabilities.Also planning to keep a CD Writer handy. Where I need help in this plan is to arrange for the machines for the first day.I have presently arranged for 3 desktop machines,but a wide range of hardware is preferable. Hence,if anyone can get along laptops pre-installed with Linux or Sun VM machine, that'll be of help to me during the demonstration,because I would be sure all the hardware works with Linux(or at least know which hardware to skirt) and there will be no "Eh,this thing should have been working" moments.Ideally,I plan to have a range of specifications from low power to highly powered rigs. I also need experienced people to lend their expertise in framing how to speak to people who drop in to check out the machines on the first day. Therefore I invite willing members of ILUG-Bom to speak about GNU/Linux to people who are interested in finding out more after experiencing the Operating System. Alternate broadband dialers illegal?

Hi, I had written a broadband dialer for sify (antidialer) some time back. during this time, sify decided to change its dialer protocol for unknown reasons and include some cryptography** in it. I wanted to know if it would be legal to reverse engineer the dialer (not necessarily disassemble it) or wireshark packets to analyze and try to write an alternate dialer for the new protocol. I'm asking this for the following reasons: 1) I am not using the dialer for unauthorized access -- it is simply an alternative means to login using a valid account. I have to do it because the linux dialer crashes before or after I login and the customer care has not been responsive to my complaints so far. 2) There is no EULA for which I have to click through when I use the Linux based dialer, so reverse engineering it should not be illegal right? 3) Someone had mentioned once on a forum (indiabroadband.com or something like that) a while back that it is illegal to "break" cryptography. If it is legal then I could go around attempting to understand and implement what the protocol does. **It's really some silly xor/reverse with MD5s from what I could understand so far. -- Siddhesh Poyarekar http://siddhesh.in

I agree with the list member[s] who say[s] newbies should be treated respectfully. when i was a [greater] newbie, i had a bad experience on this list, a member was extremely rude to me. so i kept both myself and my suggestions away from the lug-meet that i had written to enquire about. i guess that is what that member wanted, anyway-- someone new is always threatening to the coterie. re the thread discussion about silly questions: lots of people, esp. from our cultural/educational atmosphere *cannot* absorb knowledge except through a conversation. they simply cannot parse the written word, esp in English-- there is a mental block, otherwise lack of confidence, or simply the necessity to think with the left brain that makes them manual-averse. here, the person is not someone necessarily lazy, stupid or mentally challenged. Static IP Setup.

Hello I use MTNL Triband connection, recently I applied for static IP and got one (59.185.196.123 [ just example ] ), does any one know how to set this ip static on my ADSL Router (iball 54M Wireless ADSL2+ Router, Model No.: iB-WR6111A) I also want to setup NAT on the Router to access my LAN from outside. this Router is capable but I tried many but not yet succeded. MTNL call center help was of no use, those guys just know basic dynamic setup. Hi, there's this section 43 of the Indian IT Act, 2000, which says in subsection b, that [any person who, *without the owner's permission*] ==quote== (b) downloads, copies or extracts any data, computer data base or information from such computer, computer system or computer network including information or data held or stored in any removable storage medium; ==end quote== [could stand to be fined to the tune of up to a crore rupees]. this is sufficiently vague for the authorities to screw people who have not been permitted by sify to work with their cryptography. of course, the law doesn't apply if your name is raju ;) best suhit kelkar.

List has been really old and there are several members who might have subscribed and forgotten or lost interest. We are seeing huge number of unwanted emails The list is for serious people who want to help and want to be helped ( thats the objective, pls dont debate the current state ) Can we have all list members confirm their membership once again so that people who are not serious and do not reply in X number of days can unsubscribed with due notification / reminder whatever process ? Because here we are not looking for number of members we are looking for quality. Also for members who willingly / accidentally spam the list with invites should be removed from the list and if they are serious about being around can join back with an explanation instead of going into a loop and eventually fighting Also it will be appreciated if the list owners will redistribute the list guidelines for the benefit of fellow members and include relevant suggestions from other members. These are only my suggestion. I encourage list admins to think about them and members to reply simple Vote + 1 / - 1 or list admins to setup a poll. Hello, Here are a few suggestions that will hopefully help members of this list enjoy their stay here and avoid the flame wars that keep flaring up and take up precious bandwidth. Just like a doze machine that has its resources eaten up by viruses, spam, spyware and bloatware, we could all contribute towards reducing flame wars and promote better relations among members. Here are some guide lines we could all follow. 1. We are all guests on this list, which means we have to abide by the host's (list's) rules and regulations. It includes abiding by the rules of moderation which is necessary for any public list. Without moderation there is chaos. 2. We have not created this list but have joined it for the purpose of being in touch with other GNU/Linux users of Mumbai. Our rights and privileges on this list are limited and not absolute. 3. If we had created this list then members would have the freedom to leave it whenever they found our messages insulting or personally attacking. However since this list is created by others and we are only guests here, it can be a very difficult and embarrassing situation for one guest to find that he/she is being attacked by another guest. 4. This is a public list with the scope of discussions limited to Open Source / Free Software, Software Freedom and occasionally technology related matters off topic, there is absolutely NO scope for discussions on social or political issues unless they are directly related to incidents of use or restriction of use of Free Software in rare cases. 5. National Coalition for promotion of FOSS - meeting on 22.02.2009

Dear All, Many of us have been advocating for several years the adoption of FOSS applications and platforms and FOSS related advocacy has been gathering momentum. Last year, we had an advocacy processes relating to software patents and the OOXML debate, we had RMS and Eben Moglen visiting various places in India sharing their views on FOSS. Yet, we do have a long way to go before FOSS is widely used in India. Bringing different groups of actors (who believe in the principles of Free Software), including academic institutions, NGOs and CBOs, research and advocacy groups, professional associations, FOSS enterprises providing services in different areas as development, training, support and maintenance, we believe will help in supporting and cohering a positive discourse in favour of FOSS. Some of us have been thinking that a loose national coalition of such individuals/ organizations and associations should be formed that will work towards the widespread adoption and promotion of FOSS. Such a network of organizations working along a broad consensus on promoting FOSS will provide stronger and more effective responses to events relating to FOSS as well as initiate proactive actions than perhaps individuals or institutions acting in isolation. We are writing to you all, to suggest a meeting to discuss this idea of the coalition and thereafter also items for immediate action. We would request you to join for a half-day meeting, on Sunday, the 22nd of February to discuss the same. Time : 3pm - 6pm Venue : CIS office, Cunningham road, Bangalore, landmark - same building as Wockhardt hospital Map : [1]http://tinyurl.com/apltcb Present below is the proposed agenda for the meeting - a. Formation of a national coalition of organisations advocating for FOSS. The goals, scope, priorities, approaches, structures, issues / risks, alternatives, resources for such a coalition etc, name of the coalition will be discussed. Some proposed activities which can be discussed - b. Working with government departments and public sector units advocating them to adopt and promote FOSS When we individually speak to any of our contacts/departments in the government the impact may not be significant. However, if we send collective representations to departments such as the e-Governance, IT, Education, RDPR departments, and seek meetings to explain the issue and the advantages of FOSS, it would gradually help them to look at the issue in depth. c. FOSS initiatives in the country, including the Gujarat ICT in schools program Many state governments across India are in different stages of adoptiong FOSS (many on the extreme of not using FOSS!) and we can share our understanding and views on the current situation. The Gujarat government for instance is implementing a 500 crore ICT in school education program. They are inclined to go towards FOSS, however the final decision has not been taken yet. We need to look at ways so that they consider FOSS seriously. There are also plans for a FOSS workshop in Delhi, where different groups, including political parties and government officials could be invited and disuss the advantages of adopting and promoting FOSS. d. FOSS initiatives in Karnataka There are some initiatives in Karnataka for which we can work together to help in the adoption of FOSS. We have an informal request for a proposal for a pilot project to train government staff and vendor staff in Bangalore on GNU/Linux platform that has been chosen for the ICT in schools program. We also need to work on the issue of using Nudi on FOSS. A big impediment currently to getting the government to use FOSS is be that 'Nudi' works only on MS Windows and does not work on FOSS distributions. Lastly we should explore what could be done to help VTU adopt FOSS and prefer it over proprietary technologies. Engineering colleges adopting FOSS will make a huge impact on the creation of the FOSS ecosystem in the state. We can also discuss other means and methods which we can collectively work on to promote FOSS. And the community will be the loser. In this case, the discussion is highly relevant as it gives a clear pointer as to why so few women appear on community mailing lists. This is a problem that worries a lot of us. I personally was horrified at the sexist way a woman respected in the community was addressed as 'my dear'. And am appreciative of the fact that she is holding her own. Please do not bring up things like 'moderation' and threats to ban people who are non-spammers. Rely on peer pressure. That is the way a community grows. Check the mailing lists around the country - the more heavily moderated a list is, the faster it dies down. For the past few years both Chennai and Mumbai lists have been very free with the admins keeping a very low profile. DWG Viewer in Linux?

Hello, A client of mine only needs to read DWG files and print them. Currently he uses the free DWG viewer from Autodesk in doze. I want to migrate him to Linux. On the net there are hardly any proper viewers that I could find. There is an lx-viewer but it uses openDWG libraries that are available only to members of the openDGW group companies. Hello list, There has been interest shown by a few students in VJTI College, Matunga, Mumbai to hold sessions on FOSS/GNU/Linux(take you pick). As per my discussion with the ACE(Association of Computer Enthusiasts) society, they have free time on Wednesdays after 2 p.m. when they would be interested to attend sessions interesting them. We could make use of this opportunity to spread awareness of FOSS and the community amongst the students. The biggest stumbling block is the time - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, which is work hours for most. If someone has the free time and inclination, they could take up the topic of their interest and hold a session. ACE has been able to obtain permission to hold the seminar in the college and outsiders can be allowed to attend the session too. Following facilities have been arranged for 1) A room which can hold upto 50 people 2) A projector 3) A PC loaded with Linux If you need something more for holding your session, we can try and work it out. The date that we have availed is Wednesday, 25th February 2009 after 2 p.m. Couple of topics that they have suggested from their side are:- 1) Introduction to Linux(duh!) 2) Python (there's a small group of people who are interested and have begun with python) -- I know it's weird, but it does make it easier to write poetry in perl. :-) -- Larry Wall in 7...

Hi all, Have tried 2 programs-- notecase 0.7.1 and gjots2 on ubuntu 8.04 (i386). Both are buggy and crash randomly or cause saved data to disappear. The developer for notecase has opted for development/support for a commercial version now and there is no support for the free version. Ubuntu also does not maintain it. Gjots2 crashes on pressing the backspace key. I have been using freemind 0.9 but it has some drawbacks-- particularly speed (because of implementation in java) and features not found in the outliners. This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as the K Desktop Environment 3.5.10 (KDE), an updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 2.22.2, the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment, LXDE 0.3.2.1, the GNUstep desktop 7.3, X.Org 7.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox), Icedove 2.0.0.19 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird), PostgreSQL 8.3.6, MySQL 5.0.51a, GNU Compiler Collection 4.3.2, Linux kernel version 2.6.26, Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5, Python 2.5.2 and 2.4.6, Perl 5.10.0, PHP 5.2.6, Asterisk 1.4.21.2, Emacs 22, Inkscape 0.46, Nagios 3.06, Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1 (dom0 as well as domU support), OpenJDK 6b11, and more than 23,000 other ready-to-use software packages (built from over 12,000 source packages). With the integration of X.Org 7.3 the X server autoconfigures itself with most hardware. Newly introduced packages allow the full support of NTFS filesystems and the use of most multimedia keys out of the box. Support for Adobe(R) Flash(R) format files is available via the swfdec or Gnash plugins. Overall improvements for notebooks have been introduced, such as out of the box support of CPU frequency scaling. For leisure time several new games have been added, including puzzle games as well as first-person shooters. Also notable is the introduction of "goplay", a graphical games browser offering filters, search, screenshots and descriptions for games in Debian. The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based applications in Debian's "main" repository. Further improvements in system security include the installation of available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the Suhosin hardening patch. For non-native English speaking users the package management systems now support translated package descriptions and will automatically show the description of a package in the native language of the user, if available. Debian GNU/Linux can be installed from various installation media such as DVDs, CDs, USB sticks and floppies, or from the network. GNOME is the default desktop environment and is contained on the first CD. Other desktop environments - KDE, Xfce, or LXDE - can be installed through two new alternative CD images. Again available with Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 are multi-arch CDs and DVDs supporting installation of multiple architectures from a single disc; and this release adds Blu-ray Discs, allowing the archive for an entire architecture to be shipped on a single BD. In addition to the regular installation media, Debian GNU/Linux can now also be directly used without prior installation. The special images used, known as live images, are available for CDs, USB sticks, and netboot setups. Initially, these are provided for the amd64 and i386 architectures only. The installation process for Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 has been improved in many ways: among many other improvements, support for installation from more than one CD or DVD has been restored, firmware required by some devices can be loaded by using removable media, and installations via Braille display are supported. The installer boot process has also received much attention: a graphical menu can be used to choose front-ends and desktop environments, and to select expert or rescue mode. The installation system for Debian GNU/Linux has now been translated to 63 languages. Debian GNU/Linux can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the recommended way), jigdo or HTTP; see Debian GNU/Linux on CDs [1] for further information. It will soon be available on DVD, CD-ROM and Blu-ray Disc from numerous vendors [2], too. Upgrades to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 from the previous release, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed "Etch") are automatically handled by the aptitude package management tool for most configurations, and to a certain degree also by the apt-get package management tool. Still problems with kubuntu 8.10 wired internet

Hi, I am still not able to get over the problem. I get no connection from the MTNL internet from different places using the ethernet. I have an Acer Aspire One laptop and using Kubuntu 8.10. I recently upgraded the kernel. ifconfig shows an address in eth0 for inet6 but no address or mask for inet. I tried what Rony had said to manually edit /etc/network/interfaces or to use nano but both did not give any result. Sometimes, after the edit I get eth0 connection "unmanaged". I tried to change to "managed=true" but even that did not work. When I go to K->applications->system->network tools I can see that there is both ipv6 and ipv4 in lo but only ipv6 in eth0. I believe MTNL dhcp requires ipv4. Any workarounds? Thanking you in advance. Sanjay

allowing restricted sites via squid

Hi All, We are using squid along with squidguard to block the websites. Now due to company policy we've blocked all the email sites with squidguard blacklist, wherein we've also blocked gmail.google.com Now, our company has purchesed domain name specific mail address from google. for example mail.ourdomain.com, wherein if anyone types mail.ourdomain.com it will be redirected to ourdoman specific gmail. The problem here is as squidguard is blocking gmail.google.com and which is inturn backbehind mail.ourdomain.com, the users are not able to access that site. What we want to do now is, we still want to block gmail access, but if someone goes thru mail.ourdomain.com, then he should get the access to gmail. How can we achieve this? Few more bits about our squid. It is configured in non-transperant mode. i.e. we mannually provide the proxy to users. Kmail nuking mails

Hi, I have a folder in kmail with some read messages and some unread messages. The last read message is blank. No subject, no sender, no date and no content. If this is deleted, the next mail also vanishes - no subject, sender, date and content. And if it is deleted same thing happens to the next one. But if I do not delete the 'no subject' mail, I can read the next mail and so on. All the other folders are ok. Internet problems

Dear All, Having a problem with getting the network with my MTNL modem through ethernet. I might add that I have MTNL ethernet modems (ADSL) in my home, my office and my father's office. However, though DHCP is enabled on all three, my laptop (Acer Aspire One) does not seem able to connect at any of the three. When I ask for a new connection after connecting the wire (the wire gets detected so I don't get the "no carrier" message) I get the state of device eth0 as "ip configuration" by hovering the cursor over the icon of Knetworkmanager. The ehternet light lights up on the router and the little light at the ethernet point on my laptop also lights up. So I think the cable is ok in all places. The desktops at all the three places are working. One curious thing is that Knetworkmanager tries to make a connection and gives the state for decive eth0 as "ip configuration" even when there is no wire in the ethernet jack if I ask for a new connection. In fact, even when there is no wire, I do not get the "no carrier" message. The connections at the mtnl router level are by PPPoE. Hello All, Recently Knopper released new version of Knoppix (KNOPPIX 6.0),With lot of new features, which includes. 1.A.D.R.I.A.N.E. <http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-adriane/index-en.html>(Audio Desktop Reference Implementation And Networking Environment) is a talking menu system, which is supposed to make work and internet access easier for computer beginners, even if they have no sight contact to the computers monitor. A graphical environment with also talking programs and arbitrary magnification using compiz-fusion <http://www.compiz-fusion.org/>, is another option. 2.Accellerated boot procedure: Independently from the usual SysV bootscripts, multiple tasks of system initialization are run in parallel, so that interactive desktops are reached very fast. Who will be seat-holders? 4] What is the penalty for verbal abuse? Removal from the conversation? Removal from the forum? 5] What is the tentative deadline for drafting an action plan? 6] Which are the people/resources we know we've got in the bag? * Here is the 'Six Boxes Approach', (by Bill Blundel, Washington Post) which you can use to structure a mass of information into usable shape, by considering the points: HISTORY IMPACT SCOPE CENTRAL REASONS GATHERING AND ACTION OF OPPOSING FORCES THE FUTURE This can be used while discussing too. My DLINK 502T ADSL modem is behaving real flaky. Today it spontaneously reset my programmed values (ip, incoming rules etc.) to factory default (192.168.1.1)! When I try to changes it IP number to a different network, it simply does not save it. I realize there are a lot of folks here with the service. hi, I just got a Logitech QuickCam Go. I'm trying to record video with it but failing. The webcam is supported (same hardware is a the QuickCam Chat). Here is what I have done after googling. I can record a jpg with (the backslashes are mine) mplayer tv:// -tv \ driver=v4l:device=/dev/video0:width=320:height=240:outfmt=rgb24 \ -frames 1 -vo jpeg I get a file 000000001.jpg in my current directory. I can also see a video feed in the video config of kopete. Hence, the webcam works. What I can't get working is this mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0 -nosound -ovc lavc -o wcrecording.avi wcrecording.avi just shows a black screen when palyed w/ mplayer I also tried ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 /tmp/out.mpg but it barfs w/ this error [video4linux2 @ 0xb7f6b110]Missing/Wrong parameters /dev/video0: Error while opening file can someone please help ? thanks. Website does not open Hi All, We are accessing airtel website with following address. http://117.99.128.32:81/ or http://117.99.128.32/ So far when we were having windows proxy server, we were able to access the site through our proxy, but as now we've moved to squid3.0 stable1 proxy server, the site does not open. When you hit the above address, the title gets displays in the brower but the page does not open. Which means the request is going to the airtel server & the request is coming back upto the proxy server, but it is not passing through proxy. Can someone let us know, why is this happening? which stable version should one use

Hi All, Whenever I visit squid-cache.org site. I always have a doubt is, why there are multiple stable version available for production release? What i mean is, when there is 3.0 stable release is available for production, then still why 2.7 is available. I can understand that, older versions should be available to the users, but then it may come under older version head not in the current versions list. Other thing is, when there is a latest version available, what is the need of develpment in the older version. i.e when we've ver3.0 then why 2.8. All the patches, bug fixes, new additions can be done in the newer release then why ver2.8? Is there any specific reason for that? If yes, then which version one should use? Because all the versions give you production release. I also have observed that, even after publishing the stable version on site, they withdraw the older stable version, do something & again put back. My question is, if you withdraw any software version for any reason, it does not become a stable version. If anyone is doing some bug fixing into it or even a minor change of code, it should appear in the latest stable release. This gives you a track of bugs & bugfixes. But if you takeback any stable release and put it again after some time. What does it mean? If it was stable why it was taken back? If not does it really justify the stability? For e.g. At this moment , the squid3.0 stable 10, stable3, stable 2 are withdrawn. Some peoples find my questions silly, but I've a doubt and its always better ask instead of knowing nothing. kget can resume downloads, other download managers can't

Hi all, I've been having the annoying problem for quite a few days. kget is able to resume interrupted file transfers effortlessly. However wget, curl, axel, lftp when trying to resume, send the appropriate Range Header in HTTP/1.1 but fail to get a reply back. They wait for a long long time, still nothing. What is it that causes this, and is their a solution, so that I can use wget/curl for the downloads. Thanks, Nikhil

Choice of PDA

Hi, I am in the market for a new PDA. I've been using a Handspring Visor for the last several years but it's now really falling apart :(. Initially I used to sync it to linux using coldsync + conduits but later found jpilot and things were really cool. Two way sync was a dream. I presently also have a Sharp Zaurus 5500 but with openzaurus gone and angstrom developers not really interested in developing for the 5500, I have been looking at stuff on the net and can't really make up my mind. I need the following: Sync - both ways with a _linux desktop_ natively. This is essential. I'm willing to bust my chops setting it up the first time but I'd love to have a scenario where I just plug it in (or use wifi/bt) and it syncs. Calender - with reminder Contacts - with categories (this seems to nix the Nokia E51) Password wallet - again essential, preferably something I can read on my desktop too. At present I am using gnukeyring, which is perfect for the job. Ability to install other software - I have some medical books, and OTP generator amongst other things. Think kismet/wellenreiter. Cross platform - I'd love to be able to have the ability to sync my _next_ pda/smartphone with this desktop software and not have to manually copy over all my stuff. wifi/bt - either but both would be super. I have looked at the Nokia E51, and seen openmoko on the net. Any other choces ? any gotchas ? I have looked at opensync but it does not seem to be ready yet. I get this response on a computer desktop at home. The machine is connected on the internet thru a wireless router . On the same router my laptop can access apt-get etc. On this machine , with 8.10, internet works but not apt-get. Hi All, I am Vinay from IT for Change, an NGO in Bangalore. The Gujarat government has announced a 500 crore ICT education program for its schools. (http://www.indianexpress.com/news/rs-500-cr-for-computers-in-schools/405217/ ) .They have also said that they are inclined to opt for FOSS in the schools. They have not however fully decided. What has possibly queered the pitch is that Microsoft has said that they will offer windows for free. Getting FOSS in schools will greatly benefit the Gujarat government and all the students. Hence some of us are initiating a campaign to influence the government to decide in favour of FOSS. We need the support of the FOSS community here, especially the FOSS community from Gujarat. I am writing to ILUG-Bombay though since I heard that a lot of members here are supportive of the Gujarat FOSS scenario. If a lot of people from Gujarat join us in the campaign it will help to get the government to go the FOSS way. Showing the Gujarat government that there is a vibrant FOSS community might assure them that there might be support for them if they go the FOSS way. What will also tip the scale is if can show the government that a localised (Gujarati) distro of FOSS, localised FOSS apps exists, which can be used in schools. We need the help of the community here too - to help us figure out what apps/distros should be suggested. Requesting your support in this campaign. Hi All, Can any one let me know, how much cache is being used by my squid3, so that I can increase/decrease it, if required. Currently I've 2GB of cache defined in spool. Is it really required? If yes, is it really been using? When I look into my access log file, I can find most of the time it is TCP_MISS/200, TCP_MISS/204, TCP_MISS/304. External eSATA hard disk mounting problem

Hi, I hava a eSATA external hard disk. The units does not show up when I plug it in after the system boots up (Fedora 9), but is available when it has been switched on before the system is booted. From a Google search, I found the command "echo "---">/sys/class/scsi_host/host{n}/scan" which made the external disk be mounted automatically. I checked that there is a directory "/sys/class/scsi_host/host{0-6}" and a file "scan" which has a permission of "-w-------". Can anyone explain how this command works, or give some pointers for further reading? Thanks and regards. sadhu

Hi all, I have seen international bulletin boards (forums to be more exact) using free software like phpbb, SMF (Simple Machines Forum) but most forums which are dedicated either tech or anything else most seem to go for a proprietary board like vbulletin . Does anybody know of good boards which use any GPL/BSD or any soft or hard copyleft license . I am looking for forums and boards where atleast 10-15 people are posting daily and it doesn't have to be tech. So any topic is ok. The virtualbox license --- clarification from the FAQ --

please let me know (see previous mail which may not be put on the linuxusers list) 1. I have Kubuntu LINUX 8.0.4 from CANONICAL (ONLY security upgrades are free from 3 years). 2. How do I install virtualbox on Kubuntu LINUX 8.0.4 or should I say accomodate UBUNTU 8.10 ----- newer linux version --- free and legally for a 10 user organization or even say a 100 user organization ---- read the license below, i have to install it manually it appears to say ---- no sysadmin tools can be used or i have to let each USER download virtualbox binaries from sun and install it themselves. 3. now, my problem. I get virtualbox, I get Kubuntu LINUX 8.0.4 ------- my OLD machine no longer accepts UBUNTU LINUX 8.10. So do I install ANY LINUX which virtualbox supports ---- and then hope that virtualbox supports all the LATER versions of LINUX (including 8.10) so that I can get all the upgrades from the world on the LATER Linuxes and stick to my old tested Kubuntu 8.0.4 --------------------- and have LICENSED copies of Window running under virtualbox. I mean how much RAM will I end up using on my machine. What exactly do you mean by personal use and academic use in the Personal Use and Evaluation License? Personal use is when you install the product on one or more PCs yourself and you make use of it (or even your friend, sister and grandmother). It doesn't matter whether you just use it for fun or run your multi-million euro business with it. Also, if you install it on your work PC at some large company, this is still personal use. However, if you are an administrator and want to deploy it to the 500 desktops in your company, this would no longer qualify as personal use. Well, you could ask each of your 500 employees to install VirtualBox but don't you think we deserve some money in this case? We'd even assist you with any issue you might have. Use at academic institutions such as schools, colleges and universities by both teachers and students is covered. So in addition to the personal use which is always permitted, academic institutions may also choose to roll out the software in an automated way to make it available to its students and personnel.

Hi all, I am a newbie here. I wonder if this is the right place to raise this query. I wish to know how does RHCE certification really helps. I am RHCE myself. The classes don't really help much beyond the scope of the exam and the hands on experience one can get is when some employer is willing to accept a fresher. In recent times, I noticed the trend asking for minimum 6months of Linux experience. I remember the time when RHCE certified professionals were in short supply but with the word spreading fast there is a glut and that, coupled with recession has taken a toll on how much an RHCE certified guy earns. There are some who earn as Rs 7000 to 8000 PM. Are the times indeed so bad or the companies are just exploiting? Regards

NOT MERELY To be freely used, at no cost, for any purpose whatsoever --------------------------------------- SO FOR SOFTWARE ---- stripping off the legalese --- what points do you want to embed in your FOSS license ------- and why is FOSS seeking war with the commercial movement by seeking to destroy the commercial movement. 1. The software should be open-source. 2. Perhaps x% of the code can be hidden for commercial or security reasons. 3. The entire software should be open. 4. Linux Addiction !!! I work in NGO @ Panvel. Here I switched one department (20-25 Users) 0n Linux 3 years back. They use OpenOffice 2.2, Tally 7.2 (Linux Ver), Kmail, Firefox and Write & Font software with using Wine. Today When I ask in one department in organization that "Can we switch over to Windows? As some body is donating Licensing cost for those PCs" All users said "No, We can't work on Windows now. We need only Linux"... I got pleasant surprised by their reply. I thought that they will switch to Windows. Three years back when I was pushing these users to work on Linux. I had to explain them advantages of Linux. They faced lots of issues in their daily work. Some of them I could resolved easily, some of them took a long time, In some cases they had to change their working style. But now when they are using it for last 2.5 years without any issue, they dont want to go back to Windows. They said that they forgot how to work on Windows. .... They got addicted to Linux now..... :) People say that Linux is not user friendly and cannot be used for Desktops for general users. Now I can surely say, if management plans to use Linux in offices, users & admins work hard on it without having windows in mind then they can switch to Linux. Comrades, I had asked for help on the above topic about 8 issues ago (Vol. 68, issue 47). I seem to have been drowned out in a semi-legal debate on GPL licensing. My own view is that all knowledge, and therefore all source-code (like all land and all means of production) is, in fact free. It is only the capitalist-imperialist system that makes us pay for what has been acquired by loot at some stage. Hence the only reasonable (and, therefore, ethical) response, is to take all this back by force (or guile) to the extent that one requires it to survive and to the extent that this is possible while, at the same time, fighting to change the system altogether. Hence I blatantly copied pirated copies of M$ for as long as I could. I had thought that M$ turns such a blind eye to pirating only because they don't really care about the "small" pirate. However, now I feel that it is a part of M$ strategy to kill other platforms like Linux! As long as M$ is available free of cost from pirated copies, people will not seriously turn to Linux and other platforms. M$ is backed by millions in advertising. Now with little pushes like the "Genuineadvantage" update which was automatically sent to all XP systems since the past two years or so, M$ has started gently edging the users, especially the large ones, towards paying up! I think that Linuxers must look upon this as an opportunity. We cannot, for obvious reasons, advertise like M$. We must push the new distros, with all their genuine advantages, to the people (read computer users) at large. Our methods of propaganda will, perforce have to be popular. We cannot advertise in the electronic and print media. We can, however, have free demos in schools, colleges and other places. Lists like this can be more active in providing help and alternative solutions. We can start publicising as to which corporations support Linux, like Skype and which do not, like Nokia. Which brings me to my original question. Can anyone help me to sync my Nokia E50 with my laptop (Acer Aspire One - Kubuntu 8.10) through USB? The details of my query can be found at Vol. 68, issue 47. I presume that my query was merely drowned out in the more pressing debate on intellectual property rights. I make this plea merely to remind fellow-listers that I still await a response - anxiously and eagerly. Thanks again in advance.

Can somebody tell me how to get 3 years compatibility on ALL packages of LINUX and Windows on ONE machine

Hi, What do I do ? I have a machine with 786 MB of RAM. If it was Windows, I could use ALL my purchased packages on it for 3 years --- till the Windows was replaced ------------- I assume. Now, LINUX supporters say, over 3000 packages free. So, Kubuntu LINUX 8.0.4 is installed on my machine in MAY. Do I download (I did not) 3 DVDS of entire possible packages with that release. CANONICAL guarantees SECURITY updates for 3 years. I tried installing UBUNTU 8.10 on my system. IT did not install. Then I thought ---- let me use VIRTUALBOX. The FAQ on virtualbox license says I can manually install it on as many machines as I want. (On SUN's commercial release too), or I can let each user manually install virtualbox themselves. So what am I suppossed to do: 1. Install Virtualbox on my LINUX machine (or sorry, is it Windows machine for Windows packages). 2. Install more memory for each version of LINUX and sub-version I wish to run. 3. Tell my developers to forever keep upgrading the software to the latest version (of what may I ask). Erach

Dear fellow gnu/linners I'm a faithful reader of this list, and an avid user of gnu/linux. In the past this forum has helped me solve my doubts, given me the feeling of community, and even landed me an assignment or two, as I am a freelance journalist. That is partly why I usually go over each and every post regardless of what it says. I say this as someone who cares. Do we want to be remembered for vituperation, inconsiderate ranting, at times even name-calling? An honourable forum member had mentioned, rightly, a while ago, that everything we write is archived away (doubtlessly cleared too, eventually). What example are we setting, then? Aren't we representatives of a misunderstood community with few active ambassadors? Should we be quarrelling among ourselves? Don't we (or, some of us) have a mission, defined adversaries, allies? Should there be quibbling between allies then? Aren't we evangelists? Doesn't that put the obligation of decent behaviour on us? What ambassador acts out of petulance? What sage calls his congregation dolts, or idiots? What example should we be setting? Should we call others stupid, lazy, unthinking, when we were such ourselves when we started out, and perhaps still are? A champion of free speech, Salman Rushdie, once wrote to the effect that what we despise in ourselves we hate in others. Should we funnel our fury into a name-calling binge directed at our fellow users? I hope you will appreciate this communication for what it is-- an appeal to the better sensibilities within all of us, to end the hateful heated repartee we've been seeing over the past few months. I know there are other linux options for virtualization available like parallels and vmware but we are not in a position to experiment as of now especially after virtualbox. Sync Nokia E50 with Korganizer and Kontact

Can anyone help me to sync a Nokia E50 phone with my laptop (Acer Aspire One - Kubuntu 8.10)? I need to do this by usb cable (since Aspire One does not have bluetooth inbuilt). Have checked out help on the net for bluetooth but there does not seem to be any for usb cable. When I tried to follow the tutorial on smoking linux for using pcsuite with Obextools, KMix crashed. (I have reported the bug to launchpad and it is now registered as 178063). Would appreciate any help. Thanking you in advance. Sanjay

Kernel 2.6.27.8 = Goodbye IDE?

Hello, I have twice compiled kernel 2.6.27.8 from source. During make it detects 5 problems but they don't look significant and 'make CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y' resolves this problem. However after booting from this kernel and its relative initrd.img, the process stops at devfs and kernel panic. The system is unable to read /lib/modules/[kernel]/modules.dep. IMHO this is basically an indicator of the ide drivers not working. During make menuconfig, I observed that the IDE modules can only be included as modules <M>, not 'in-built' in the kernel like <*>. In one section, the Help contents even mention that this option should not be used if your root system is on the IDE drive. This could mean that while the booting drive is not IDE ( means SATA ), the other drive detected after booting can be IDE. My system is an Intel 845 with IDE drives. Has anyone on this list successfully booted from 2.6.27.8 using an IDE HDD on an 845 chipset mobo? Do the new kernels mean goodbye to old hardware? Could this be one reason why K/Ubuntu 8.10 does not boot live into an old 845 chipset + IDE system? -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! No Viruses No Spyware Only Freedom.

cannot set resolution to 1440x900 on Debian Etch

I have installed Debian Etch on a gigabyte motherboard GA-MA74GM-S2, having AMD 740G + SB700 Chipset. The website says it has ATI Radeon 2100 integrated graphics. Output of lspci is as follows: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 796e This driver selected for this is "vesa". If I try "ati", X server refuses to start. But the main problem is resolution - it is set at 1280x1024. I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and setting resolution to 1440X900, but at that, the resolution was set to 1400x1050 when X server was restarted. Even adding the resolution manually to the Modes lines in xorg.conf and restarting X server did not solve the issue. How can I fix this? Thanks. -- Rohit V. Bhute

Where is the cost to build new school buildings ---- new Universities buildings and so on ? Can we not do an hybrid of online learning ---- meet in rooms. People do satsangs in their own homes everywhere of the guru of their choice. You can call this an online University satsang. Hi, My apologies to the net for flooding them with requests and top posting and breaching netiquette (I apologized to both Easwar and Sanjay). Well, my Ubuntu 8.10 does NOT install on my Kubuntu 8.04 computer. And Canonical promises only 18 months of SECURITY updates ---- not ALL updates. Yet, I have ordered Kubuntu 8.10 from CANONICAL. My machine has something like 768 Kbytes of RAM. Now, what can a KIOSK do ---- why should cultural book depot or a college put a kiosk. How can you enhance the marketing appeal of a LINUX kiosk in any book-store (educational). Well, how about training courses English (from Hindi/Marathi/local Indian language) followed by online testing (a cybercafe would love this) followed by in-person testing or (in-camera testing in the cybercafe). The training course could be scheduled for 1 hour of adult training or 30 minutes of adult training daily and distributed via DVD / CD ---- computer should not be needed if you want to reach the very poor --- but if you wish initially computer could be needed. What are the consequences of boosting English, boosting Education, boosting even skill-based training and knowledge-based training ? Well, Google language tools translates web-pages into Hindi (written) and shows original Wikipedia pages in English. The IIT's have courses they distribute online. Why are you focusing on KIOSK and LINUX (Linux is merely a tool, Windows works just fine/see Wikipedia) ---- why not an entire University. (Sorry, I am a toothless PhD so I seek to inspire you to lift your vision for Education --- but I have no resources or labor to give). Flame me if you want. You have seen students smoking outside colleges ---- do you think you could inspire them to build open-source content (or content for a cheap fee). There is a website which sends you the revenues for free of all the videos loaded on it. I asked an old woman (67) whether she would put an Italian-Hindi cd (author it, she teaches Italian when she has students), she promptly said, what is in it for me ? Erach

hard-disk queries

Hi friends. Does Linux auto-powerdown a SATA hard-disk, if none of its partitions are being used/mounted? I have a WD 250GB drive on a SATA port, with ext3 partitions. 2-3 times I heard swishing sounds and clicks. This morning I fired up the Partition editor after one such event and found that the drive was not listed in the partition editor. A reboot fixed the problem. Another issue was I am getting 'could not read block <7-8 digit number>' errors (which would terminate all the operations) when I tried to merge two partitions on this drive - by deleting one and growing the other. I got same error when I deleted the second one and created a new one of size equal to sum of earlier drives. I succeeded when I tried again second time. I monitored the drive for 2-3 hours this morning by frequently loading the partition editor, but it appeared in the editor without fail. Is a HDD failure imminent? Regards. -- Rohit V. Unable to mount folders exported by NFS Server

Hi, I am having three linux system in my LAN with details as follows: 1. Open SUSE 10.2 with Static IP Address 192.168.0.2 and treating as Server. 2. Fedora Core 6 with Static IP Address 192.168.0.3 and treating as Client1. 3. Zenwalk Linux 5.2 with Static IP Address 192.168.0.4 and treating as Client2. Now I want to export one fixed folder to Client1 and another fixed folder to Client2 from Server so that I can work on Server from Client Systems using the concept of NFS. For this purpose I made following entry in the /etc/exports file: ======================================================================= # See the exports(5) manpage for a description of the syntax of this file. # This file contains a list of all directories that are to be exported to # other computers via NFS (Network File System). # This file used by rpc.nfsd and rpc.mountd. See their manpages for details # on how make changes in this file effective. /home/rashid 192.168.0.4(rw) /home/ccpplinux/public_html 192.168.0.3(rw) ======================================================================= Then I started nfs server on the Server system with the following command: ======================================================================= linux-server:/etc # /etc/rc.d/nfsserver restart Shutting down kernel based NFS server done Starting kernel based NFS serverexportfs: /etc/exports [1]: Neither 'subtree_check' or 'no_subtree_check' specified for export "192.168.0.4:/home/rashid". Assuming default behaviour ('subtree_check'). Similarly from the Client1 system I tried to mount the folder exported from the Server: ======================================================================= [root@FedoraClient ~]# mount -t nfs 192.168.0.2:/home/ccpplinux/ /root/server/ mount: 192.168.0.2:/home/ccpplinux/ failed, reason given by server: Permission denied [root@FedoraClient ~]# ======================================================================= As you can see I am getting message of Permission denied. So I am unable to make use of NFS in my LAN. Can you please help me so that I can start using the facility of NFS on my Linux Systems? It works quite well except for infrequent dhcp no ip address issues. I am using it with both Ubuntu & Fedora with a wi-fi AP cum router in between the reliance wimax router and my laptop.. The wimax router requires power so u need some ups/inverter for use during power cuts. So I guess the issue is not "this distribution v/s that distribution" but movie production distribution v/s music production distribution v/s server distribution v/s easy to use distribution. Supercomputer for rental --- any takers for research / university / what rental commercially possible with LINUX

Hi, Suppose I had a 150 TB / 74 CPU dual quad Intel on Rental.Connected by dual Ethernet of 1.0 Gigabits second. Would it help advance research in India ? Would new pharma drugs come out of it ? Should it be given to students say at the rental of Rs 500 a month/Rs 1000 a month (they can easily afford that from their UGC scholarships ---- what max can I charge for it). In 2 years time it wouldn't cost much. And it would generate tonnes of parallel programmers. Currently, would it be good for high-tech research all over India/third world countries all over the world ---------------- can such a super-computer be used for destruction/ I say NOT. This would spur tremendous research in the next 10 years as Universities churn out people over a Beowulf cluster. Erach

The plan I have chosen gives me 25 to 30 kBytes of download and upload speed. There is an outdoor antenna which is powered over ethernet. It is placed on my rooftop. In my case, I am using a 4 port router and configured it to obtain WAN IP address over DHCP. Using NAT, I can share this connection to multiple PCs at home. For user-authentication, they provide a web interface which work beautifully on Firefox. Unless you authenticate, all web-requests are re-directed to their authentication server. Earlier they used to sell 2mbps connections, but when I approached them many months ago, they told me that that scheme had been terminated. Then I had been promised 300kbps bandwidth. For unlimited data transfer, I pay around Rs.1150/- per month(including taxes). During rains too I have used this system without problems. But I can't confirm whether it works reliably over an extended period of time during heavy rains. I am afraid of toasting my router in lightening, and hence keep it disconnected from the wire during heavy rains. I have faced no major problems except some irritants (see below) which I can live with. At least their service is hundred times better than Sify's. This is a major advantage compared to any wired connection. Especially if you provide services to your clients in real-time, something like this is necessary. Now the irritants with Reliance Wi-max: 1. Their DHCP connection is not very reliable, at least on Linux machines. The strangest part is, whenever I use a Windows machine, I get an IP allocated to me immediately. But it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to get an IP on my Linux box (it used to run SuSE 10). Even on my router, I have to carry out following procedures in exact order to get an IP fast: a. Switch-on the power to antenna. b. Wait for two minutes. c. Switch-on the power to the router. d. Wait for at least one minute. e. Check whether IP is allocated or not. Most of the time you get an IP. But if you fail to get it, go to web based admin console of the router and click on buttons meant to renew DHCP release and/or re-new. Then you get the IP and the connection remains rock solid for the rest of the session. 2. On some rare occasions the connection fails after some usage. If that happens, then there is no way I can get authenticated again immediately. Whenever I re-try authentication by submitting the web form, I get the message of authentication failure. This problem gets rectified automatically after half-an hour. It seems they have placed some mechanisms to prevent password-guessing-attacks. Raghu

Hi, Has anybody use the Reliance WiMax (Broadnet) services? I am more interested in their services in Mumbai. Good, Bad, Ugly? Apparently they install separate antenna for each connection. The size of this is as big as a laptop monitor or such, thats what the marketing exec told me. What I want to know is - 1) compatibility with Linux Boxes 2) does it work during the rainy season? Considering that rains in Mumbai or Panvel is slightly on the extreme side ;), does it work fine during the rainy season? I guess the same applies to the DTH setup even. Only reason, I am thinking its worth a try is because I won't have to depend on availabilty of power and such because I will be responsible to provide power to the setup which I can in case of load shedding as well. They are actually. I think what he said was technically correct but emotionally offensive. If we mix facts with emotions, we don't reach anywhere in a public discourse. It should be noted that the family and friends of Indian citizens are not suffering for the first time. Every week we see many people dying in terrorist attacks in different parts of our country. The Mumbai offensive was a high decibel one and hence it got higher visibility in public. This has shaken the establishment. The government could have lived with multiple low decibel terror strikes spread over a longer period of time, even if their cumulative score of victims were more than 200. For example, just count the number of such victims in different parts of our country in last five years. Regarding loss of life of near and dear ones; if one dies in terror attack or in the hands of workers of some political party, the loss is the same. While looking at the issue of rights of citizens being usurped by our government, we need to look at hard facts, sans any emotions. Are we supposed to give up our right to privacy just because terrorists are striking us whenever they want? We also need to look at the experience of people in other countries like US, UK etc. where citizens have lost a lot of their privacy after 9/11. In US, there are some draconian laws in place in the name of homeland security. Is US safe just because of these measures? What are the views of experts residing in those countries on these issues? These are the questions one should be asking and discussing in detail. Hi friends, We are currently in talks with some of the Big Movie house about making 3d Animated TV serials in India. We would be starting from January. Now we would be having a studio with a team of around 50 people and 30 Workstations, Servers, Render farms, Storage solutions etc. Now we want to utilize the full potential of our Hardware. Windows does not have this ability. We want the entire Setup in Linux. We would like to know, if there is a group or people in this List who can undertake This kind of work. If yes, we would like to talk immediately. Next, we shall work on Maya, Adobe software's etc. So the Linux Flavor should support that. How to divide single storage on multiple servers? Storage Cluster

Hi, I want 150 TB Network storage. However buying NAS from EMC takes Rs. 1 lak / TB. and from Fortunestart takes Rs.50K/TB. Which is pretty costlier for an NGO. Can I make one NAS from Multiple servers ? For eg. If I setup 5 servers with 1 TB space then after seting up cluster I should get 5 TB space accession outside the cluster. Is it possible? I think by default with WinSCP it uses Port 22 and SSH portocol. My suggetion for you is instead of setting up FTPserver use SFTP server. It is more secured. Hi I am facing problem in setting up vsftpd. System: CentOS 5, vsftpd-2.0. I am able to connect to server using windos inbuilt ftp program, but filezilla and winscp fails to connect. Then I turned OFF SELinux and IPtables to check if active/passive mode is creating problem. Still no luck. Can someone help me resolve this? Thanks Richard

Special Permissions as those in NTFS

Hello, In the NTFS file system, under the security option in a folder's properties, there is an advanced option where a user/group can be restricted from writing or deleting existing files in the directory but at the same time can be granted permission to create a new file or folder. So while existing data on that folder cannot be edited or deleted, the user can paste new files in that folder. Can such special permissions be granted in EXT3 or JFS file systems? On the net I find that advanced ACLs mainly have 3 options of read write and execute. If write permission is granted, user will delete files.
