Linux compatible AMD64 motherboard...

Hi, One of my friends wants to go in for a new system. He is keen on dualbooting with Linux and Windows. He is going in for an AMD64 3000+ system. He asked me to recommend a good compatible motherboard with moderate to high performance. I am a complete newbie to AMD systems. I have a sempron system but I am clueless about which motherboards are available for AMD64 let alone the good ones compatible with Linux... Anyone with an AMD64 system please respond. PS.: I heard that AMD64 is based on different cores. Which core should he get? Also what should be the operating frequency of the DDR RAM he buys? 333MHz or 400MHz or should he go in for a DDR2? I know that the CPUs FSB and the RAM's OF should be in sync for optimum performance. What is it for an AMD64 system? -- Dinesh A. Joshi

synchronizing samba and kerberos password

we have a kerberos and samba server running in our lab for authenticating the linux and windows user respectively. both use openldap 2.2.23 as the backend. The problem is we need to synchronize the password in both kerberos and samba. we tried including an overlay called smbk5pwd that comes with openldap3. but we were not able to do that. How do we include smbk5pwd in openldap2.2.23 ? is there any other solution for synchronizing the password in samba and kerberos. we are using MIT kerberos V -- S.Senthil Kumaran blog : http://sskganesan.blogspot.com

I have a relatek rtl 8139 based zebronics ethernet card after a lot of struggle i manged to obtain the drivers that compiled properly. But after doing depmod as the readme file said, what do i do next.. I use fc2, i have tried using wizards that come with fc2 as m a newbie, but that says the device is probably not there although it works fine m$ I have tried googling but havent found anything that would solve my problem. -- Puneet

Umbrella Installation Software

Hi all, Does there exist a sort of umbrella installation mechanism that could take care of the specific ways of installing various software distribution mechanisms. I mean if the software is a tar file it should extract it, and then provide me with a dialog box for configure script flags and execute make and make install. Or for rpms it should execut the command rpm with appropriate flags. If it does not exist do you think there is any merit in trying to build one?? I know its just a gui for certain commands but if it helps non-programmer users why not?? -- Puneet

xine installation problem

hi i did install libxine1-1.1.2cvs-051214.i686.rpm and xine-ui-0.99.4cvs-051003.i586.rpm for xine but when i tried to invoke xine this is wht i see at command line - xine: /lib/i686/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.2' not found (required by /usr/lib/libxine.so.1) Although the lib mentioned above is present on my system at the same location mentioned above then why the problem? This involves the Dislin library I mentioned in an earlier mail. I used it earlier in Dev-C++ using Mingw. In that case case, I simply added the file 'dismgc.a' in the Linker parameters window. I want to test it in Linux now. And in the Linux version of the library, there are two files, 'dislin-9.0.a' and 'dislin-9.0.so' - which library file am I supposed to link to? And how do link to a single file, from the command line? Both the library files, the header file and the source file are in the same directory. I'm using Ubuntu 5.10, it has GCC 4.0.2. -- Rohit V. Ubuntu 5.10 Nvidia driver install problem

Has anyone faced a problem with installing the Nvidia drivers on ubuntu 5.10 I have an Intel 815 mobo (integrated graphics), but I'm using the AGP slot with GeForce 2 MX 400. When i try to install the driver using "sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx" (as in ubuntuguide.org) everything installs ...but then when i restart x (ctrl+alt+backspace) or restart the comp ... the machine reboots at the point when x is trying to come up. So then i tried installing the official nvidia drivers. Since it didnt have precompiled module for the kernel (i'm using the one that came with 5.10) it build it (i downloaded gcc 3.4 for that and kernel headers), but the same thing happens again. Every time it tries to start x it reboots. I could do with some help here. Anand.

Evolution - mail disappeared

I recently decided using Evolution Mail. I downloaded all my mail (over 2k messages) from my GMail account and marked then Read. All the messages disappeared immediately. However, a day later when I tried to search for a mail I figured out there is no way to view the Read messages. On Windows machines problems arise when they start fooling around with system files or donâ €™t respond appropriately to warning messages. By contrast, the greater security provided by Linux means kids can play, largely unsupervised, with little risk to the system. This briefing looks at various aspects of using Linux with kids – both in terms of software and playing with hardware. Gnu/Linux is a really good computer operating system – especially if you like playing with networks or programming languages. But there is one area where both the resources available with Linux distributions, and the efforts of the Linux support community to provide assistance, are a little thin – using Linux with young children. This briefing has been developed to address this shortfall in support. The development of this briefing has not been a formal study. It has emerged as a result of the experience gained in studying how two young children (right) have been able to learn how to use the computer, and the functions of the graphical desktop. What follows is therefore a documentation of the knowledge gained from observation rather than an in-depth study. It is also the reason why this briefing is limited to the ages three to seven. Multiple errors ? hardware related

Hi, Sorry for the somewhat vague subject. also sorry for the rotten formatting, I am using webmail just now. I have a new (as in a couple of months old) machine. The specs are: 2.4 G P4, i845 integrated graphics card, 512 ram, 500 mb swap, 80G hdd, 15 inch Sony tft monitor. I have FC4 and Kubuntu 5.10 on the machine. The problem I face is that every once in a while, the X server crashes. In FC4 I am back at the graphical login prompt. In kubuntu I just lose the display completely and I have to shutdown. This can happen as frequently as once evry 5 or 10 minutes :( Sometimes I get kernel panic messages when the Xserver crashes. Another thing is that in FC4, both Firefox (upgraded to 1.0.7 from fedora updates) and Opera crash very frequently. Also Gkrellm crashes suddenly. I goolged for Xsever crashes w/ i845 on google. It seems to be an old problem (end 2004). The solution was to recompile the kernel to include the i915 driver, but it is already in the kernel and is seen as being found in Xorg.log. free shows 0 swap though the entries in /etc/fstab are correct. On bootup it does show as enabling swap. I am at my wits' end, the hardware chappie as usual is no help. I've run memtest but with no errors coming up. I can provide any more info as required. regards, Sharukh.

error - missing config.h in kernel sources

hi, i am trying to upgrade the driver e1000. for which i have to rpmbuild the driver to make an rpm. this is what i did, i am runnig kernel version, 2.6.14 (installed via rpm running on FC4) then i downloaded latest e1000 drivers sources from intel's website. then i did, rpmbuild -tb e1000-6.2.15.tar.gz gave me an error that version.h is missing, googled for it, and got the answer, had to do, make include/linux/version.h in kernel sources dir. but after that if i again give that, rpmbuild -tb e1000-6.2.15.tar.gz gives me following error, make: Entering directory `/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/e1000-6.2.15/src' Makefile:101: *** Linux kernel source not configured - missing config.h. This is something interesting I read in the linux-magazine.com: Not so long ago, professional quality 3D animation required expensive workstations. The software they ran, for example, Maya (Unlimited Vision), cost more than $15,000 early in 2002, and the software technology was hidden behind restictive licenses. What's the 3D animation process? The process starts with modeling the shape of the 3D object. The next stage is texturing, that is, adding a kind of skin. This step gives the model a natural looking surface with light reflexes and a surface structure. UV mapping projects 2D bitmaps (such as wood grains) onto the 3D surface; in its simplest form, this is like posting a bill on an advertising column. The 3D model can then be animated. In the rigging process, joints are added to the figure. The joints allow the the artist to move a complex object like a puppetter moves a puppet. After completing the basic animation scene, the animator adds special effects, such as water, fire, or smoke. The scene is then lit by positioning light sources, just like in conventional movie making. The post production is concerned with optimizing the nearly-finished product, coming it with the movie or video scenes, and adding a soundtrack. Also: Normally, many different programs are used to create a 3D animation. First of all, you need a program to create the 3D models. In most cases, animation and rendering (conversion of finished models to photo-realistic images) are handled by separate programs. Rendering is so vastly complext that it typically requires a specialized tool. But Blender mainly uses subwindows that are full of buttons and slide controls. The itnerface design lacks logical consistency. Internet Explorer Emulation on linux

Hi, Is there anyway we can emulate internet explorer on linux? (any distro?) While testing out sites (Especially when using CSS), it's a pain to see things display differently than intended in IE. Considering that most people use a combination of WinXP/98+IE combo, we cannot ignore this demographic and i dont want to use up a machine on windows just for testing. Fedora Core 4 CD required

Hello All, I need Fedora Core 4 CDs urgently. Can not download as download speeds are too low. I found Mr. Sanket's contact from list archives but unfortunately he has DVD and not CD. Other sources are not in Mumbai. If anyone has CD set and can either lend me for 2-3days or give a copy to me for nominal charge or in return of blank CDs then I would be grateful. Terminal and Sudo

Hello All, There are two problems for which I need some help. 1. Right from the start, FC4 is not able to open terminal windows from Ctrl+Alt F1 to F6. They would just be a blank screen. F7 would be back to GUI though. I checked up on the net and it was related to some bug in the gcc https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=161242 Since no such file was available for yum update, I put on the Yumx and checked all updates that had the name Xorg. Now F1 to F6 open but on going back to F7, the display goes bonkers. It only shows blinking cursors and hourglasses. It cannot go back to F1 to F6 either. Only a forced reboot works. Any tips? 2. I installed sudo but configuring the sudoers file is a little complex. The sudoers example site http://www.courtesan.com/sudo/sample.sudoers has detailed explanation but how would I add a line to allow, say user1 to give sudo commands without a password? Sharing an Internet Connection

hi, i have a reliance fwp phone which i use to connect to the internet. I want to share this connection with two of my friends so that all of us get equal bandwidth if accessing at the same time. We have thought of two possible alternatives 1. the computer to which the phone is connected to have two Ethernet card with a p2p connection to the other two. -are there any issues regarding equal bandwidth division with this approach and secondly will a simple proxy software do or do we need some additional software to make this approach work. I am currently using Fedora core 2 but if there is any other distribution more suited to this then switching over to that is not a problem. 2. have a switch or hub and use that to share the connection. The only problem with this is the additional cost as where i live(vellore, tn) 4 port switches are difficult to get and an 8 port one cost around 800-900 i guess so that means an additional 300 bucks per person. How to draw graphics in linux?

I want help for how to draw such graphics in linux...is there any inbuilt tool provided ? I got some information about the Glade & GTK+ ...is these tools used for developing only user interface or do they used for creating graphics? Network problem

There is an odd problem I am facing. I just realized that I can't ping anyone on the network...not even myself (localhost). :-s I am using two IP addresses in the form of eth0 and eth0:1 . The eth0 is used for Sify's static IP and eth0:1 for the local network. Amazingly, everything including all internet applications and DC work perfectly. But neither can I ping anyone's IP on the local network (except for Sify's server) nor can others ping my IP. The point is that this is happening only on Ubuntu. These things seem to be on m$. Due to this problem, I can't use applications like vnc and gnump3d. What could be the problem? I have inserted lines for eth0:1 manually in the /etc/network/interfaces -- Regards, Sanket Medhi.

Hello All, This is a little embarasing to ask as something as simple as triband is not getting setup in linux. On the day we met at Bandra, later I tried it out at my uncle's place and no success. Now I got it at my place and I tried dhcp as well as static ip but nothing works. In dhcp, the dns becomes 192.168.1.1 instead of mtnl's dns, so I made it static but no result. /etc/resolv.conf show the 2 dns entries. Help help!! Hacking the DSL502T

Opened the ADSL. Inside is a Malta MIPS processor from TI TD7300, 8MB ram and 16Mb (2MB) rom. There is 5 pin berg connector which has a LVTTL serial port and a 10 pin jtag. The jtag is neat for mucking inside the cpu and flashing the flashrom or debugging using gdb. I will use serial as it is simple for regular stuff. Ideally U need a lvttl to rs232 converter (MAX3232) to connect to a pc, but that device is not easily available. I used regular MAX232 and connected to the pc. Fire up minicom @ 38000bps u drop into sh. type reboot first message is TI copyright follwed by LINUX started... Config serial console: ttyS0,38400 CPU revision is: 00018448 Primary instruction cache 16kb, linesize 16 bytes (4 ways) Primary data cache 16kb, linesize 16 bytes (4 ways) Number of TLB entries 16. Linux version 2.4.17_mvl21-malta-mips_fp_le (jenny@fd6e) (gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release/Mon5 Determined physical RAM map: etc. etc. Google produced plenty of info on dsl502. I'm currently using ubuntu and I'm very happy with it. It has all things which Debian's side of Gnu/Linux can give, and its working fine with lots of newbie/intermediate user friendly documentation. I read many flame of Linux vs BSD and flamers seem to be supporting BSD, Should i install BSD flavor and try it? will it just work like ubuntu (Automatix, wiki.ubuntu.com)? Revant

Hi guys, I am planning to get a 802.11g Wifi router. My choices are : WGR614 - netgear 432BRP - trendnet wrt54g - linksys di524 - dlink xxxx - SMC (dunno the model no.) I have gotten a couple of quotes. The lowest till now I have gotten is for netgear WGR614 from a shop at Lamington road( I think its called Maxcom or something). Is it good (the router)? Does anyone use it? Any problems? Lemme know. I have a Netgear WG311v2 card and its drivers suck. Netgear hasn't released many updates but I can somehow work with that card using Ndiswrapper. Though, I love my Intel 2200PRO wifi card. It's drivers rock! :D Anyway, I would like to the following: 1. Where will I get the Trendnet router? Asked a couple of places. Nobody had it. I contacted Trendnet USA. They gave me a phone no. of a guy in Pune! Couldn't contact him. But they definitely have that product in market and in India. I am keen to get this product because its low cost and more over I have their 5 port switch which works really great. 2. Hello All, I have shifted to gmail as yahoo's uk server appears to have disabled pop access for Indian users. Gmail is all set in thunderbird but on clicking 'get mail' it connects to pop.gmail.com and just remains hanged. Is this related to some security setting in the triband or linux that's causing this. Gmail users on triband please help. All pop and smtp settings as per gmail's instructions, so that area is ok. Regards, Rony

Mounting Problem

I am using Redhat 9 and at the time of booting it displays Mounting local file systems and other filesystems are failed. The correct message is, "Mounting local filesystems: mount: wrong filesystem type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0 or too many mounted file systems. .... Mounting other filesystem: floppy0: probe failed floppy0: probe failed .............................. end_request I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 0 vfat-fs: Unable to read superblock mount: wrong filesystem type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0 or too many mounted file systems." i couldnt find the error i wil be pleased if someone helps me in this. [OT] MTNL TriBand - rollover of unused MBs

For the past couple of days I have been checking the "Account Summary" for my NU plan and noticed that my unused MBs from Nov/05 have been rolled over to the Dec/05 quota thus giving me much more than 1023MB. At first I thought it was probably an error but apparently it is not. Each time I check - the counter "Free DSL MB ..." is consistent with what it showed at the beginning of the month decremented by my non NU usage. I was under the impression, the download quota got reset to the plan max. every month. hello all, i m hacking on the code of tty_io.c file , in /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/drivers/char directory... i dunno how to compile it after making some changes there in the c file... actually,i have put on some printk in between..and want to see the response in /var/log/messages.. Bt,bt i have to compile it..,which i dunno,as to how to do.. if i give just make command in the directory . /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/drivers/char directory..it simply says.. make: *** No rule to make target `/cp437.uni', needed by `/consolemap_deftbl.c'. FAT partition unusable in debian

Hi friends, I had formatted my complete hard drive to install debian linux. One of the partitions I had made was a FAT32 partition. But, due to some mistakes in partitioning I had to repartition my hard disk. But, this time I left my FAT32 partition untouched. I have mounted it as /entertainement Now, I cannot write to that partition using normal user account. Though I can do it as root. I tried to change the permissions using root but I couldn't allowing to do so. Any ideas about what can I do?

Visited the Indian patent website http://patentoffice.nic.in Browsing thru the applications reveals filings for such things as methods for zooming, play list, graphic equalisers - all in software - filed by the likes of Samsung (who seems to be one major spin master) , TCS (for a software for some business process) and others jerks from Australia, USA etc. All the applications were filed in 2002. The patent office publishes applications every week. http://patentoffice.nic.in/ipr/patent/journal_archieve/ patent_journal_2005.htm We should scrutinise them and alert FSF India where ever software / computers / electronics and prior art is involved. Ubuntu 5.10 Live Report

Hello All, This month's LFY magazine has a Ubuntu 5.10 live CD that can be used as a live sample of the Ubuntu 5.10 OS. It installed and setup smoothly. The system was P4 2.4 GHz, Intel 845 GEBV2 MB, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB IDE HDD. The display drivers were much better than 5.04 and gave good screen resolution unlike 5.04's basic 640x480 resolution. Sound could not be tested as multimedia was not complete due to legal issues :-P . Due to the dhcp now working in linux too, the triband ADSL modem got the system on the net as soon as it was up. The firewall inside the modem took care of open ports in the live system. The wvdial.conf file from my other distros was simply copied and run. It ran smoothly for both, the dialup modem as well as the Reliance LSP350R. Only thing to remember is that all root based commands must be preceeded by the word 'sudo'. And after the first run of the triband internet, switch off the adsl modem and after any of the wvdial connections are up, run the 'sudo route add default ppp0' command for net access. The transcend 512 mb pen drive was detected flawlessly and a cute little icon was automatically created on the desktop. On the whole it was a very good experience and this distro came out in flying colours. It is definately worth a try. :) My only query is that if root access is not allowed for security, still anyone can simply sudo and gain access. How is the system protected from outside. If anyone can hack into the user account, can he then sudo and play ball? How secure is this sudo? If however, I change the IP address of eth0.5 to 10.1.3.244, I can ping 10.1.3.128 (because now both are on the same subnet, and same vlan) I thought that even though the source (10.1.1.10) and destination IP (10.1.3.128) address are on different subnets, as both are on the same vlan, the gateway should be able to forward the packets. Playing sound files/songs

Hi Everyone, Data Quest is apparently doing a survey on Linux Desktop usage. I know because they called me to ask me some questions on their questionaire. The sad thing is that the guys doing the survey have absolutely no idea of what they are doing and apparantly not even connected with InfoTech. First they had a very unclear way of introducing the matter, asif worried that they will be asked something they cant answer. I told them that yes, I use Linux Desktop software. He asked me again whether I use Linux on Desktop. I clarified to him that we have stopped using desktop computers and everyone in our firm now uses Laptop computers but we use Linux in the laptops. The big joke is that he said "Oh, so you do not use Linux in Desktops.....Ok, thank you" and put down the line. They guy obviously does not know the difference between desktop computers and desktop software and that Linux Desktop software can also be loaded on laptops too. If anyone knows some of the senior managers in Data Quest, please convey this to them. I am quiet sure that at this rate, they will show a very low user numbers. Regards Saswata

SMTP for Internet

Gtk 1.2 themes

How can I change the gtk 1.2 themes? I got gtk-engines-industrial with apt, but cant change the theme of my gtk 1.2 apps (xmms, Audacity, Vlc Player, etc.) I tried to change the theme with gtk-theme-switch package and also by manually editing ~/.gtkrc file. I cant see any change in the above mentioned apps. revant

Couple of things to be taken care of when using The Best DSL service in Mumbai. 1) Please change router password from default "admin". By going into the router--->Status, I can get my router's IP address. If I keep trying the IPs directly in ascending or descending serial order, sure enough I will reach other routers and where the default password is admin. Not that I can gain anything out of it, but can fiddle around with the settings and make it difficult for the other person. OR simply enable remote telnet management/web management and try and exploit those. Changing the admin password is a good first step. 2) The login/password (phone number/CA number) will work from any modem/location which has DSL enabled. This means that unlike the Caller ID based dial up system, I can use my username/password from anyone's dsl enabled location. The converse is, someone could do the same to me too. while they can get your number from the username field if they access your router, they cannot get your CA number. However, one call to the call center and a couple of requests later, you can get that too. for any number. They do not have a good verification system in place. So you can start downloading on others time. Just like the usernames/passwords circulated during VSNLs 15000/yr TCP/IP account days. Changing the default password by going to the mtnl website and subsequently in the router would be another good step. 3) Also, after every change, we are supposed to go into Tools-->System, Save and Reboot. This does not work with Firefox 1.5 beta atleast. Hope this helps. I have already told my sub divisional engineer about this and sent a brief note to the feedback form. Hi people, I want to make an mp3 player in Linux. It's just for the experience. I was looking around for the specs of mp3 format. Couldn't find any. That is kinda obvious since mp3 is a proprietary format. But there are so many open source mp3 decoders AND encoders. Where / how do these people get the specs? Wanted Video Cropper

Hello All, I am looking for a video cropper that works in FC4. Uncle google pointed towards LIVES. After some dependency hassles I downloaded LIVES but thats too slow and hangs and sometimes I need to press the reset button as it hangs my system too. It may be due to the conflicts in rpms as some dependencies were downloaded from yum and some from the forbidden lavin(?). However I am now looking for something thats easy to load directly from yum and works properly. I have converted some dvds to single mpeg files (in windows) and I need to split them into 2 cds. Hello friends, I'd like to ask a very trivial question today. Actually I am a novice Linux user and am taking sure but slow steps towards complete migration from Windows to Unix/Linux. I am using RedHat Fedora Core1 at my home and college, but the only real hurdle in my path to becoming a full Linux only user is that I cant connect to the internet. I have this FC1 system, with a Bsnal broadband connection. At the time of installation, I didnt configure my IP address or DNS service. I let it remain default to DHCP. But now when I create a new xDSL connection using Internet connection wizardover my NIC card (eth0), the connection does activate as the message says, but the websites dont open. Also, at the time of bootup, what shoul be the message regarding network interface eth0. I hav always got an OK message when I didnt configure it . But after assigning it an IP 192.168.10.1, it says failed to bring up my ethernet card. So kindly help me out, coz although I am comfortable with a little administration and software package installation, I still experience a lot of problems, when trying to configure sendmail or DNS or NIS etc and this internet connection problem is making me mad. As I had really set a deadline to switching over to Linux fully( no windows usage at all), by this month's end. I hope many of u can help me out, by giving me some insight on where i might be doin something wrong, where can i find step by step tutorials etc. I hav also installed Roaring Penguin's pppoe software, but even that failed to help. I had a guy asking me to do everything on the modem conf except stand on my head. In the end I happened to mention that I had changed the password to non-default value. It was like I committed some sacrilege to ancient MTNL gods. He asked me to reset it back and never change it again. I did the same and sure as hell it worked the very first time. Hello All, Here is a link that can be used to test a firewall online. http://scan.sygatetech.com/ There is a firewall in your ADSL modem too and by default it is disabled. There are additional services that can be disabled in the inbound direction. This will give additional protection over your linux firewall. If you change your password at the mtnl website and next time you put on your system the net is down, don't worry. Simply go to the 192.168.1.1 interface of the ADSL and change your stored password. It is in Advanced > ATM VCC . Do not forget to go to Tools > System and click 'Save and Reboot' . Now your net is up again. SuSe 10 Report

Hello All, Suse 10 from LFY was tried out. Overall, it is a little disappointing considering that SuSe is generally recommended for desktop usage. This was my first trial of the SuSe distro for a desktop. During installation, its manual partition utility could not detect free unpartitioned space in my hdd and I had to reboot into FC4, my current OS to create a new partition in the free space using fdisk. Then this partition was selected in the SuSe installer. Device detection was good with sound and graphics working fine. However it could not mount CDs in my DVD ROM as well as CD R/W so media players could not be tested. A very big problem. Another important facility that is lacking is a proper gui dialup tool like kppp in kde or anything else in gnome. There was a novell dialup tool found after a lot of hunting in the packages selection list but that does not work even in root login. Otherwise, for ethernet usage this distro appears to have a lot of stuff packed in and its packages selection list in the dvd looks pretty impressive. FC4 may not be very impressive but at lest it gets its basic stuff working pretty well. Hi people, I have been using kmail for a long time and now i am experimenting with mozilla's default mail client. It looks ok. But I have a problem with both kmail and this client. I am unable to see my own replies i.e. the mail clients ignore my own emails. Is there a way I can get them to fetch my messages too? This will make tracking threads easier for me. BTW Which mail clients do you use and what configuration do you use for this mailing list? Thanks. Dinesh.

hello all, I m just trying to understand the Xfree86 code . What i am trying to do is to get the input keys from another keyboard in the network through a socket (not the one attached with my CPU).Now my problem is in getting the keys mapped correctly.I am getting the alphabets correctly,but the other extended functional keys like up,down,left,right,etc. are not being mapped correctly. If somebody can help or suggest in correct keymap,and where from the control for the corresponding extended keys are coming in Xserver. Thanks in advance... cheers Romel

Internal modem driver

Can anyone help me get the internal modem (Dlink modem, HSF chipset) up and running. OS is RHEL 3. The system detects the card, but kppp doesn't have any entry for the said card. I am also not sure which entry in /dev corresponds with the card. I may sound strange, but until now I have been using Linux only as a learning platform and not a serious PC for daily use. Hello All, There was some discussion on playing cds on linux distros and the results seem to be 50-50. The experts have been able to play movies on various linux distros whereas the not-so-experts or those experts not into multimedia have not had much luck playing them. My system has the following configuration: P4 2.4 Ghz., Intel Original 845 GEBV2 mobo, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB baracuda hdd, Sony DVD rom, Samsung CD R/W. Now since one year, I have tried out many linux distros in order to find the ideal one that can do everything or atlest do the normal stuff thats done in the 'other' popular OS ;) While its no problem connecting to the net or email or word processing or firewall, a major block exists in the multimedia area. Detection of sound cards is not a very big issue as most of the distros did detect and install sound. The major roadblock is in running the media playes for mp3s, mpegs, VCDs or DVDs. In my system, the RHEL could play mp3s only after real player was downloaded. Debian could not play anything. Mandrake 10.1 was the only OS that played VCDs and DVDs without any extra download or installation. However it had a problem of residue picture frames scattering over the desktop on close of player. FC4, SuSe 10 as well as Ubuntu failed. SuSe 10 has CD mounting problems. Ubuntu 5.04 did not create a root password so it had to be created by booting into recovery mode. Even then, in the user mode gui, it does not accept the root password for admin utilities and says 'password incorrect'. As per the new instructions given about downloading codecs from mplayer and installing them in the /usr/lib/win32 dir, all this was done but the players in FC4, SuSe 10 as well as Ubuntu 5.04 that was tried out, don't play anything and simply give some errors. My clients place an order for a computer and within 4 days it has to be ready. On the fifth day it is installed on site. In these 4 days the engineers are busy attending to other calls as well as other installations so the pattern is this: First day get the material from the dealer. Day two, install the system to test for any defects. Day two or day three, load the sofware. Day four keep the system on soak test. Day five, deliver the system. Now in this tight schedule, how is a production engineer expected to load linux for the latest hardware, with all its dependency problems? My users are mainly home and small office ones and they have a lot of multimedia activity going on. Please do not treat this message as a rant or cribbing or a complaint against linux. It is simply an SOS from a junior linuxer on behalf of other junior linuxers too. I am not looking at an individual problem for any particular distro. Its a general problem that I want to highlight. Met with GM Broadband @ MTNL last Friday and he told me that their portal software was not ready to handle NU and non NU hours for the NU plan i.e. if the login sessions spans over NU and non NU hours, the traffic could counted towards "additional usage" leading to the overcharge nightmare I posted a few weeks back. He told me to turn the modem off/on @ 00:00 and 08:00 which would create fresh login sessions until the portal vendor provides them with a fix (this method was also discussed in this list). Fortunately, with a Linux/*nix box, the following script can automate this annoying chore. You need expect and tcl packages installed in your box. Rebuilding partition table.

Hi, I just wanted to share my experience so that those who are new to gnu/linux like me can use it better. I have an 80 GB hard disk. I had 9 partitions in it. I use both windows and linux. I was using WinImage to create a virtual hard disk and i ruined my partition table. I have a lot of data in my hard disk so I somehow wanted to recover. I googled. I was continuously getting same kind of solution. Noting down the Partition start and end address and creating it again exactly. Since I lost my partition table completely that solution was of no use to me. Then I found an utility called gpart in the live cd (Slax KillBill) (I use a couple of live cds). Using gpart I was able to rebuild my partition table. though I lost one partition(and some important data). Its unbelievably good that it uses some way of determining the start and end address of filesystems in partitions and rebuilds the partition table almost perfectly. For a newbie like me, it was a great experience and i learnt that gnu/linux can do wonders if u know how to use it. Regards, Raj

image merging tool in linux

hi, i am looking for image merging software in linux (preferebly command line). i have a very big print which i have scanned into pieces (scanner size was not sufficient to scan at one go). i tried google, but no luck. tried gimp but it will have to do it manually i guess. but manually merging them border to border is not possible (due to insufficient RAM- even 2Gb is not enough, it stalls for some time even for a small movement of any image). so it would be nice, simply to feed these images to a software and let it take whatever time to do the job. the similar software is present in many digital cameras, to be used to make panorama images. any help is badly needed. thanks.

Hello everybody, This is my first post to this group. I hav a problem concerning the archival of emails. I hav been assigned a project to develop a solution to archive emails on a HP-UX system. So, Ihav started work on it on my RedHat Fedora Core 1 system, since I don't hav an HP-UX box. I am trying to test some opensource solutions and take help from them. Some of these are Aemail, Powermail, mairix etc. Some issues in front of me are : 1. I want all of u, who can help, to come forward and suggest ur own approach to this problem of email archival. 2. I am trying to test both Powermail and Aemail, available at the GNU website, but i am having problem making them run. a)In case of Aemail, I am having trouble configuring and administering PostgreSQl for using with Aemail. b)In case of Powermail, I am having trouble configuring Powermail to interact with MySQL in the correct manner. 3)Can anyone of u suggest ant other opensource solutions to handle the problem of email archival? 4) I am currently developing a solution of my own where i use Archmbox, another opensource product under GPL, to archive mails from an mbox file and compress it. then i encrypt it and send it over to a storage server. Before archival, all the emails are indexed on the basis of their date, sender and subject in a simple text file. And whenever the person wants to restore the archived email, he can search the indexfile to find the compressed file which contains the particular email.So then it can be downloaded from the storage server ( maye an ftp server) and then decomressed, decrypted to get the original mail back. can u ppl suggest any improvments in this plan of action? or whether a database can be used, if yes, where? with regards, sushant gulati __________________________________ Yahoo! FTP automation & File Sharing

hi everybody, The question i want to ask is how can i automate ftp login and uploading and downloading of files using VSFTP on Linux, using shell scripts? In other words, can explicit login and typing of username password be avoided by using shell scripts in any way to login to a ftp server. can uploading and downloading of files be automated by the shell scripts in any way? Also can anyone suggest me some alternative approach where ftp's explicit login be avoided and if there is some other opensource products like rsync etc . Can they match ftp in functionality? Boot Problem.

Hi All I had a Redhat Enterprise 4 ES, running on my system and lately i installed a fedora 4, Now i am not able to boot back to Redhat. Here is what i did~ Redhat -OS /boot -> hda1 / -hda2 Swap ->hda3 Fedora Core4 -OS / -> hda4 Uses the same swap And presently Fedora is bootable so i mount Redhat boot hda1 and copy all the main files (vmlinuz, SystemMap, initrd and config) files on to the /boot directory of Fedora Boot directory inside directory called REDHAT. Added title here the /boot/redhat/vmlinuz-EL (path) ro /dev/hda4 Initrd here.../boot/redhat/initrd.El And it boots up and detects everything then Mounting root system kjournald starting ext3-fs:mounted filesystem mount:error 2 mounting none Switching to new root Warning: can't access (null) exec of init ((null)) failed!!!:14 umount /initrd/dev failed:2 Kernel panic Does anybody has a working fedora and redhat-el and why is that grub now doesn't detect the other OS,would this be due to SELINUX?
