Hi All,
We met today and had a lot of discussions on the GNU/Hurd Operating system
and how we can start contributing to it.
------------------
I have added my name to list of members working on Email Translator project
on Hurd.in, would be helping out in testing your translator code and doing
bit of monkey testing and hopefully write some man pages.
Any chance of adding man/info pages with your code hurd hackers?
Cheers

meet this weekend
hi guys,
@praveen, arky: a few of us from bms, bout 3/4 , are really interested to
start right away with hurd... we could'nt be there because of a placement
related exam and seminar...
can you guys give us a starting point....
Hi Nirmal,
Perhaps you can download the Anand Babu's Talk on Hurd at IIsc and watch it
with friends at BMS computer club. And also participate in Hurd.in
transalator developer initiative.
Cheers

Hi Hurd Hackers,

like that.
No Problem I'll be the invisible member of the team.
>There was a big debate on #hurd about this and I got a lot of
comments/ideas.Plan9 already implement mail as translator. So we can have a
look at that.
That's a good sign, Godspeed Hurd Hackers.
Meanwhile, I'll get the introductory document on translators in hurd done.

<manuel> the only problem with root-owned files are the setuid/setgid bits,
AFAICS
Thank you for bringing up this issue, I think its really bad to approach
HURD with traditional UNIX ideas, because 'GNU is Not Unix'.
Ever since the beginning of time (UNIX epoch that is) files with 'root' or
'0' ownership is treated with greatest fear by we admins. I need to learn
more about the security architecture of HURD throughly.

Hi Arky,
Let define the problem first and then find a solution :-) I raised the
concern in #hurd channel and geot this response
Happy Hacking
Praveen
<j4v4m4n> we had a hurd demo today
<j4v4m4n> so there was this question about security assocated with the
unprevileged "login" user
<j4v4m4n> the files created by the user is owned by root
<j4v4m4n> how can this be explained to a unix guy?
<j4v4m4n> he was very upset with this, I couldn't explain the reasons
<bvk> can a guest *create* files? i thought he gets only read access -- i
never tried though
<manuel> depends on the fourth set of permission bits
<manuel> j4v4m4n: actually it's set to the owner and group owner of the
parent directory
<manuel> j4v4m4n: how is that a problem?
* OdyX has quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
<manuel> since the setuid/setgid bit is ignored when it's created by an
unprivileged process
* schlesix (n=thomas(a)xdsl-81-173-230-41.netcologne.de) has joined #hurd
<j4v4m4n> manuel, how can we explain it to a guy from unix background that
anyone can create a file with root as an owner?
<manuel> j4v4m4n: well just ask him why is that a problem
<j4v4m4n> manuel, :-)
<j4v4m4n> manuel, I'll do that
<manuel> the only problem with root-owned files are the setuid/setgid bits,
AFAICS

Hi All,
We met today and had a lot of discussions on the GNU/Hurd Operating system
and how we can start contributing to it.
We have identified some small tasks to do as a beginning.
1. GNU packaging/archives
a. Investigate on UnionFS to use for the GNU packaging/archive -> Praveen
A
2. Email as a Translator
a. Investigate on SMTP -> Vikram Vincent
b. IMAP -> Isaac
c. POP -> (open to anyone interested to build POP3
functionality to Email translator)
3./etc/password translator
a. libtrivfs translator tutorial
.... Open for anyone interested
4. Blog translator (for blogger, wordpress...)
5. Flickr translator
6. Documentation
a. Setting up a GNU/Hurd Box - HOWTO -> Sandeep
b. Translators HOWTO -> Arky
We will update the progress through the list (AB: we need a mailing list for
hurd.in)
Looking forward to participation from others.
Happy Hacking
Praveen
