Hi
Last year FSUG had a SFD in Bangalore (according to [1], [2]). Are there any plans for this year ?
[1] http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams/asiaandmiddleeast/india/bangalore [2] http://fci.wikia.com/wiki/SFD/Bangalore/07
Ambati Sreedhar had mentioned (on my blog) that Bojug (Bangalore java group) Sun and Thoughtworks would be willing to help. So would FSUG members like to collaborate with Bojug (Bangalore java group) Sun and Thoughtworks on this ?
thanks, Vid || http://www.svaksha.com ||

Good Idea... I hope we can decide some college as the venue I like to hear from BMS, RV and st. Joseph's students first On the no software patent programme Madhusoodanan & samartha was talking about planning an installfest . Can we club it with SFD?
Anivar
i think few students here are made ambassadors of SUN their job is to promote the sun products -- they say majorly open solaris --- similarly in other colleges also they have done
my concern is those students are also planning to have software freedom day ( majorly projecting sun microsystems ) -- but they might have misunderstood the freedom aspect --- some think that Sun Microsystems is the only company ---- other than that i dont think we should have any problem ----- haaan but that week we will be having internal tests in the college -- so we cant expect many participants
currently i dont have any idea bou their plan -- yet to know , if any changes are there i will update the list....
this is the status

Has someone registered the team with SFD.org ? Last year someone must have, so if you could inform the status for this year its easy to co-ordinate. the last day for requesting cd's etc was Aug 31 so we are late :)
Hi friends, Follow this thread. I am also one of the enthusiast guy to participate. Follow the thread in Bojug user group about Free Software http://groups.google.co.in/group/bojug/browse_thread/thread/415de608796346f5
Usually Amit (from SUN) and Thoughtworks really encourages these events. If we have a plan then all we can arrange

Lets Plan it in this list. ask other interested people to subscribe this list.
It will be good if we can make a plan by the end of this week .
Also we need to make followup plan for say no software patent campaign. What about conducting a FSUG Meeting in this weekend.
25th anniversary of GNU project is on 27th September. 24th September is the international Day against software patents. (see http://stopsoftwarepatents.org)
So let us meet an plan on it
I am suggesting distributed activities coordinated using a wiki We can call it as a Software Freedom week Renukaprasad , i hope you can arrange a programme in any day on this period.

dear all
excellent to see the software freedom momentum ... i personally would also like to be part of the fun !
http://slumdweller.wikispaces.com/
if some of the folks can take classes on cool software for the kids at the community computing center as part of 'Software Freedom day' that will be nice - and one more small step towards more freedom - for people - denied access to technology!
things needed are tutorials on GIMP - Inkscape - DTP - or any neat software - suited for 7th , 9th - some basic programming like logo - will also have takers - anybody wanting to experiment - wanting to work with the community - learn from the community and give back is welcome !!

Count me.
Senthil,
It's been longtime since we visited the community computing centre. That time Balaji and you had organized program on popularization of science through some practical activity for the public. The mood of the children, women, youth etc. were full of energetic and enthusiastic. I got a feeling that it should be the way one should involve people in science-related activities.
I would like to be part of such efforts.

Do you feel SFD Kit is important? It is the ubuntu CDs(e-waste) and the freedom inside jail Stuff(Open CD with windows binaries) right?
Personally i am only interested in other SFD branding stuff like Tshirts and Balloons, We can create better ones locally by bearing apna apna tshirt cost and little donations. We can distribute all Distros by keeping a Laptop with ISO images . So no need of any partiality towards ubuntu .
<Flame ON> I personally prefer Debian/ Fedora/gNewSense over Ubuntu for promoting the causeof software freedom (reasons here http://fosscom.in/wiki/User:Pravs/What_Ubuntu_should_do_to_regain_my_confide...) </Flame OF>

That SFD branding kit would have contained only ubuntu CD's since canonical is the official (is that the right word) sponsor for the project. Since it was past aug31, i was trying to help get the swag across faster but since you say Cd's are not needed, shan't waste them.
While on the subject, the Latin word "Libre" conveys the true meaning as compared to the English word "free", the latter being a stymied language unable to fully express abstract philosophies.

I think the T-shirts and if possible banners made locally would be good. We can customise it to local needs.

And since we are in India we can use the word 'swatantra' or any of its

We have an offer from Sunil Abraham . He offered us a nice meeting place+ coffee at his new office ( Center for Internet & society) on top of wockhardt hospital, Cunningham road (5th Floor). next to sigma mall
Is it a suitable place for all? If yes we need to confirm timings with sunil.

Ok, I just checked my mails after a few days (been busy with backups, file systems and Cisco firewalls at work), and have realized that I've missed both the meetings today.
Were the meetings conducted ? Will there be another meeting ?
Here are some inputs from me: - In case the number of people is upto 50, then the hall at Thoughtworks can be available. - If there will be more attendees expected, then I'll have to arrange for colleagues to attend and ensure that all visitors face no problems (and also, ahem, cause no problems - we've had some .NET user group visitors who misappropriated the food in the pantry and caused some ruckus as well :( )

Good to see this point here. Quite a few free software projects are used by Sun (e.g. Gnome is their primary desktop environment now, and openoffice and Java are GPL), so I think such an acknowledgement would not be a problem. However, if you mean something else by acknowledgement, then please do let me know. I'll communicate to the Sun SFD folks too.
I was supposed to call Vincent today but was caught up with a lot of work at office. We're going to have a Bangalore Open Solaris User Group meeting this weekend where the user group members, the college students who're opensolaris enthusiasts, and perhaps the Java User Group members would meet and figure out how we can all work together.
I think having FSUG representatives at this meet would be helpful since FSUG members have the most experience and network with respect to FSD events.

Hi all, I dunno if this would be relevant or not to the FSUG people in Bangalore but recently we did SFD celebrations in Pune .
http://flossexperiences.wordpress.com/2008/09/11/celeberating-sfd-on-interna...
I'm sure there could have been hundreds of ways in which we could have improved ourselves so invite people on the list to use if they feel something is useful from our experience as well as feel free to comment.
That's all from me for now ;)
So what's the plan regarding Christ college and BMS college for SFD? The date is getting closer. So friends let's make this event better. On Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 10:14 AM, shirish shirishag75@gmail.com wrote:
