-----Original Message----- From: Rakesh 'arky' Ambati hi friends,
Welcome move, Arun!
This is good idea and I would like to help. I guess all of us would like to help/contribute.
Perhaps what Arun meant was, that he'll provide a formal introduction to local chapter.
Anyway, its nice to know that you are rearing to go ahead. So, let me ask you one thing.
'What are you going to do/help/contribute if we approach this NGO?'

Good Question. What I have in my mind is support for their IT Needs. Training and Technical Support/Services.
We need to know their Requirements.

This is tricky - obviously, we don't have the man power to provide them support and service. Even if we eventually might have that kind of strength, we can't promise we will be available anytime they need support, since people might have their day time jobs.
What we can do is tell them about alternatives, and why Free Software is relevant to NGOs, and of course the history and philosophy of the movement. We can possibly conduct intro sessions and demos. And help them with the learning. At the best, we can pass on our enthusiasm for Free Software :) But being on call in volunteer work is going to be hard for most people, I think.

That's a very good thinking. :)
There are lot of org's which need other than support. For example, today while listening Radio City I heard a request to help National Blind Ass' (don't remember) setting up their IT infrastructure.
What I intend to do is simple, let's start somewhere. Its better than lame talk.

The person with whom i was in touch is out of station, hoping to see him today or tomorrow. I will ask him to introduce us to groups there.

That is a mistake we developers often make abt free software movement. It is true that free software movement is abt software which is of practical use. But more than that it is a philosophy and political view on ownership and other aspects knowledge. It is a movement against a social injustice.
NGOs works against some form of social injustice or other. Even though different organisations have different, even conflicting, perspective. We should strike that chord first. If we do that even if they dont migrate to free software they will support us, based on ideology.
Organisations like KSSP/BGVS dont have people skilled enough to maintain their IT infrastructure. Their priority is not IT either. So if we try to help them get their IT infrastructure to free software that will demand too much resource from us. We better wait till the demand comes from them. But they can help us spread the word. They will have good network with influential people. By associating with them we will get access to their network.
We need to learn from mistake made by Mexican school project.
BTW, some one pls announce about this list to fsf-friends. Also mail may be send to blug admin, if he thinks fit may be fwd to their list.
regards, arun.

Actually I wanted to put up the Wiki first and then minutes into the Wiki. But will postpone that for now. Getting the word out to FSF-Friends is a higher priority. I'm making the posting in the next few minutes.
Cheers, and have great week ahead... Abhas.
