Hi Gnu heads,
The Saturday meet was very interesting and we have to continue to build this team.
I have been talking to Anush and Arky about some ftuture event details. Anush has volunteered to introduce python to gnus and he had some more ideas.
So we have many themes for future meets and we will take one at a time. Don't be afraid of the long list. We will take one at a time.
1. Free Software Business Model (Arky suggested)
We will get Free Software products/services companies like Redhat, Novell, Spike Source, Deeproot Linux ... to talk about their business model. Also we will have discussion about the business model that companies like IBM, HP, Sun chose to support Free Software.
This would be better planned and executed in way to help us understand each other and enable us to pull together GPLv3 event. This can happen sometime in April. The venue could be BMS, PESIT or Saptagiri whichever comes forward first :-)
2. Introduction to python (Anush), Talk on perl hacks (Basil?), Ajax by Kushal (I hope you would be happy to do this), LAMP by Ramkrsna (I know you did this talk on last Software Freedom Day in Cochin) ...
This will be happening in March 25 Gnu(s) grazing. Any of these topics I wouldn't be surprised if all of these happen too :-) This could happen at SJCE Mysore. Sandesh Kamath contacted me and he would like to have it on 25. If we could manage it we can all go to Mysore. [Well I'll be missing it as I have to attend my cousine's marriage]. If we are ready to go to Mysore Sandesh will take care of other issues.
3. Starting Free Software Companies(Anush suggested this idea).
Well, Abhas can talk about his experience with Deeproot.
4. Free Software product development (This idea also suggested by Anush)
If we could get some one working on Free Software products like JBoss, MySQL, Anjuta.... it would be great.
5. Gnu(s) grazing at Bandhipur (Again Anush). Around April end I'm in for this.
6. Also a discussion on: IP, patent, trade mark, also geographic indicators and software patents in a fast changing tech world Suggested by Dinesh
Please put your hands togther for Anush.
I tried to put these abstract ideas to a kind of road map that will lead up to GPLv3 event. Your ideas suggestions modifications are necessary. For the time being concentrate on 1 and 2. We can do others slowly.
My 40 paise (Arky can snatch 20 paise from that :-)
Regards Praveen

Hi Praveen,
Thanks for writing the points we discussed Praveen. As Praveen has pointed out in his mail that its better to focus on points (1) (2) and keeping my comments limited to them in this post.

We just as well discuse the existing Free Software Business models and (3.) Starting Free Software Companies.

Yes, I remember abhas mentioning that its possible to get lecture room in IIsc for such meets.

There was request for Perl For System Administration tasks from Nitin. Perl hacks are really scary stuff for the uninitiated. ;o) [flame bait]

I'll be happy to attend any outside social events. More R&R would do me good.

Any updates from Sandesh Kamath on the chances of doing an GNU(s) Grazing event in Mysore Praveen. I recon you have another engagement on March 25 so, lets work out the tasks needed to be done.
And would any of the speakers would be free enough to travel to Mysore on 25 March to give a talk in Mysore if we organize such an event with Kamath's help.
Cheers

He called me last week (before my last mail I suppose). He was interested to have it March 25. I have not got any updates from him after that. May be some one could talk to him about the details (As I said earlier, I won't able to make it)

Anush hinted that he will be going to SJCE for some event, I'm not sure about the dates though.

Hi Vincent,
Please do keep us updated, but just try to keep the event open for students from other departments apart from Computer/Engineering. Free software is not limited to computing alone.
As Ramakrishna as suggested in our last meeting we need to awareness about Free Software and its various licence forms to fine arts students. Am gonna probe an distant contact in Chirakala Parishat.
If you have any contact from other institutes please do help us out.
Cheers

Sure would you all like to start with the Govt. colleges cause though they have computer education they don't have the faculty and hence suffer from immense difficulty. My group is in contact with the College Reps and CRs and they are interested in such programs. Example Maharani's college(2500 students), Home Science(1500) Govt Arts and Science college(1500+), Etc... Among private institutions we can focus on schools because personally I feel that we can find maximum potential there and with the right approach we can really convince them about FSM. It would be good if we sit down together and prioritise for best results. Regards Vikram Vincent 9448884614

That's a good, Vincent . Just check if any of your college contacts have a free slot for a talk next weekend (24 th and 25th March).
I couldn't get the contact from ChithraKala Parishad yet. But today once again try Computer Society India (CSI) chapter. This time I just gave call and just got lucky.
The CSI (Bangalore Chapter) manager Mr.Sridhar was very helpful and when I explained that we want to arrange talks as part of roadshow leading towards GPLv3 Conference he said he would happy to help us. They were having a talk on distributed computing today evening and asked if I could make it and talk to the Secretary and other officials of CSI (Bangalore) chapter. Unfortunately I couldn't make it there on time.
I think we should give them a visit this weekend, would anyone wanna tag along ?
Cheers

Yes, Vikram. Most of fellow members are either out of town this or quite busy this weekend. So, Let's approach the CSI after getting everyone's ideas.
Computer Society of India (Bangalore) office is at Infantry Road which in the heart of the city and is right place to discuss the issues like GPL, DRM and software patents.
We have lot of time to organize few talks in CSI (Bangalore) and also perhaps its Mysore office (someone mentioned it, I will follow it up). This idea was suggested during the first meeting we had in Cubbon Part.
Perhaps we should invite people like Anand Babu and other noted developers, people from academics and research, activist's and legal eagles (Ramanraj of Chennai or Pai from Kerala or Bangalore Legal Forums Lawrence Lang).
Please kindly suggest your ideas and criticism for these plans.
Cheers

I am part of a group called Forum for Science and Development(FSD). This group is involved in various activities promoting the scientific temper. Infact, we organized a seminar some time ago on "IT: A social audit" and another topic(can't remember at present) in St. Joseph's PU college. We had speakers from IIIT, IIM, scientists and leaders from the IT industry. Our forum has many people from the intelluctual community who will definitely be able to help FSUG. The Convener of FSD is Dr. Chatterjee, Sr. Scientist,Indian Institute of Astrophysics and Co-convener Dr. Vijoo Krishnan,Coordinator PG Dept. Political Science, St. Joseph's college . I think that Abhas is in contact with them cause Arun FSF gave an intro about them. Regarding patenting, they will be able to suggest experts on the topic and others.
