Hello,
I was talking to arky about what FSUG plans to do for the software freedom day. My suggestion is to have a "Linux Demo Day" in a college.
Delhi LUG had organised such an event in September last year (plans are afoot to hold another one this year) in Jamia Hamdard University. We had a good response. While we had expected around 100 people to turn up, around 400 people came in. Most of the students had tried Linux and came up with very specific question on what they wanted to do - like share drive between Linux and windows or connect windows and Linux.
We also had talks describing what is so different about Free Software. How people are using it and how it s not just "command line" anymore. There were demos and CD distribution (Delhi LUG earned a good amount selling CDs ).
Can we have something similar in Bangalore ?
Thanks

I think we should have a such an event, btw there aren't any response to GNU(s) Grazing Meet I called for so if this is case then organising such a event sounds unlikely.
But if have 3 people geared up to do it 'gnu/Linux Demo Day' kind of event then I think anything is possible.
Cheers

Yeah, we r there. i think we can form a group of 3-4 and if we can do it in 2-3 colleges, it will be great.

Can't we try to ship some Ubuntu CD's and distribute it ?
even we can try to get backup of some corporate sponsor, If such participations have nothing to harm with our basic philosophy of freedom....

That's Great :o) (Hey LunaTech I think we got the ball rolling here)

Yes, I have 30 CDS of Ubuntu CD's for x86,Sparc,AMD64 And PowerPC and we can put them on the table to distrube them.In the recently concluded DebCon5 (Debian Conference 2005) in Helenski in Finland, I was surprise to see packs of Ubuntu kept for redistribution.
Alternative suggestion is, Abhas has said sometime back to have computer with a CDROM with all the ISO images on harddrive, we can burn CD's as and when people request it for a cost of a blank CD.

That depends on the scale of the event we are going to organise first, let start with the baby steps.(phrase stolen for smitha rao)
NB:I again forget the real name of LunaTech ;P

Let us plan for just one per year currently -- I am extremely lazy :-)

Personally, I am strongly against giving anything free of cost. The reason being - it will attract a boatload of free loaders. It would be a good idea to sell the CDs at a nominal cost- say 75 rupees for a set of Fedora CDs, 100 Rs. for Debian CDs etc. That does not places too much burden on the distributor and the buyer.
However, this thing is still far off in the future. Maybe a better step right now would be to identify colleges that are willing to host this event. This event will provide the college students to interact with people who have applied the principles of free software in Real World and have (hopefully) gained from the involvement.
Delhi LUG had organized the event in the Jamia milia Hamdard University, which provided us with easy access to lab facilities, good food (very important in any event) and eager learners.

Corporate sponsorship is important. Most of the people who helped in organizing in Linux Demo Day persuaded their companies in organizing the event. Some people approached companies like RedHat, Novell, IBM etc. for sponsorship (iirc, none of them worked out :-( ). Some companies gave CD burners, desktop machines for the event. The event would have been successful without the help of these companies, but the corporate sponsorship helped in making the event a major success.
Lastly, I would like to point out that the idea behind the event was not to impress anyone or to show the power of Linux - it was all about having fun. For me, it was like a big picnic :-)

Hey I second that, Arky is more lazy than Lunatech.

I personally lost a whole pack of Ubuntu like coz freeloaders, I guess not even one was ever tried out.

Talk to your friends and provide us a some links to college collages and schools.

We can learn from your experience in this events lunatech.

Lets not think big, but lets have many small events. If we can machines or CD burners we can ask members to share their hardware.

But I want regular picnic lunatech, not once in year during summer holidays.
