Dear All,
Ms.Dakshayini from DSERT called me yesterday. She said that she received
a call from SSA called her and told her that the file has been cleared
and the program can go ahead for the 16,17 and 18 of July. They are
waiting for the official letter to come out before they send the
circular and this should happen on Monday, July 13.
So right now, Batch one will happen on Jul 16,17 and 18 and Batch 2 will
happen on Jul 23,24 and 25.
The slight hitch is that the SSA training hall where we installed Debian
edu may not be available on Jul 23,24 and 25. I will speak to SSA about
that on monday.
Will keep you all posted.
Meanwhile, I see the pdf with the training schedule on the wiki -
http://fosscomm.in/Resources/KarnatakaSchools/BaseSyllabus
, but like we discussed, we should have all the content entered in the
wiki so that people can easily view and edit. Vikram - can you please
take care of this?
Also, Vikram - since the dates have been moved for a week, will we have
a problem getting trainers? Or are the people still available.
We need to know by Tuesday morning as to who are all the trainers who
will be taking sessions. Please co-ordinate with FSUG and Sampada also
since there will be trainers from there also.
Please have these deatils (of trainers and volunteers) also up on the wiki.
Please call or email for any questions.
Thanks,
Vinay.

Hi,
It would be great if we can send our response to the Open Standards
policy. I'm already working on a response by PLUS and FOSSCOMM, it
would be great if someone can volunteer to prepare a FSUG-Bangalore
response. ILUGD already have a response. The draft document and
responses from various organizations and user groups are linked at
http://fosscomm.in/OpenStandards
Especially with our earlier work on Software Patents and Document
Freedom, I feel this is a logical step we should do. It would also be
good if we can have a meeting to discuss this issue. How about this
weekend? If it is morning time, I can join over IRC.

Hi,
There has been some efforts earlier to have Kannada support in the
debian installer, but it has not progressed much. Now with Karnataka
governments decision to use GNU/Linux in schools, the importance of
Kannada translation is even more. As Malayalam co-ordinator I can
share my experiences in the translation process if anyone is
interested or you can contact Christian Perrier directly (he reads
debian-in-workers list - so a reply to the list would suffice).
If interested please respond.
Regards
Praveen

The opportunity to *experiment* with Free Software necessarily means
using all its freedoms - to escape from accusation of merely "using"
it. There may be plenty of areas like soliciting students to
contribute to the graphics contents or to the localisation efforts, in
the beginning and substantial hacks towards the end - most of which
cannot be undertaken with non-free software and finally distributing
or publishing them under GPL. Once teachers are exposed to these
possibilities, they may be able to solicit opinions from their own
student communities and come out with better findings.

The IT@School project currently equips a student community to *use*
Free Software under its IT-enabled curriculum. This amounts to
exploiting Freedom Level 0 only. Limiting an education curriculum to
this level is highly inadequate to prevent its retrograde movement
back to proprietary software at a later stage.
However, incorporating exercises in the curriculum that must need the
other existing levels of Freedoms for its implementation, calls for a
different kind of orientation that must be imparted to teachers of
varying disciplines. An education curriculum developed this way can
never change its direction at a later stage. It should only be after
such a loophole-plugged curriculum, that one can convincingly say that
a student community is being *equipped* with the ideals of Free
Software.
Regarding the modalities on the implementation of a system that
exploits all the existing levels of Freedoms may not be as arduous or
tough as is thought out to be. Teachers of our public education system
have an astonishingly high acumen in coming out with exercises from
their own disciplines. Perhaps, all that they need, may be an
invitation !!!
