Why is it that FSF-I has no public opinion about anything important?
Chennai, Kochi, Bangalore...
We want to know the reason for FSF-I not being a part of the conference.
>From the Vision of FSF-I http://www.gnu.org.in/why-we-exist the only work of
FSF-I is to be a not-for-profit company with certain goals which are not
mass movement oriented. This is not useful to the Free Software Movement
which is a mass movement.
Is FSF-I democratic in its constitution? Meaning, are the members elected or
do company policies apply?
If FSF-I continues in this manner then why do we need any FSF-I? We need an
organisation which can guide this Movement and not simply to give
verdict/blessings that "this/you is/are right", "that/you is/are wrong",...
We want to know how FSF-I intends to proceed in the future. Does it plan to
be a participant in the Movement? We want it to be democratic and
representative of the Movement in all senses and not simply through talk.

Hi,
I had contacted Mr.Srinivasan of NRCFOSS, detailing him about the VTU-MS
tie-up and the plans from FSUG side. They very much understand the
consequences and impact of this tie-up and hence have replied in a very
positive note to help us with all our endeavors in this campaign. They
themselves are looking for contacts in various colleges and universities
in Karnataka, may be people like Renuka should get into touch with
him/NRCFOSS. I am CCing this mail to Mr.Srinivasan as well.
I have also attached a poster of the Seminar on Employment Opportunities
in FOSS as suggested by Mr.Srinivasan. It'd be great if you can put it
up in your college/office. He had also stated their wish to let
VTU/Colleges know about the FOSS Certification Program offered by
NRCFOSS. If someone in this last can let him know about people to
contact in VTU that would be of some help.

Dear All,
The M$ VTU campaign page has been again vandalided. Discussed this with
Justin and Anivar.
Anivar feels it could be M$ ;)
We will try some protected editing.
thanks

Hi all,
Yesterday a computer in an internet cafe I go to crashed due to
constant irritating viral infection (They run Windows here). So they
asked me for an XP CD. I suggested them to install Ubuntu and they let
me do it on one of the systems, and now they want more! After looking
at what all comes with it without paying anything (of course they were
using windows illegally). They have 256 MiB ram but ubuntu is fast
enough....
Now I'll be installing ubuntu on all other.. But my point of writing
this mail is... How will the public who visit the cafe respond to it?
But I think this is a nice way to tell people about GNU/Linux and give
them their first experience, of course they'll feel this is good and
try it at their place! maybe I'll ask the cafe owner to burn ubuntu
for a disounted charge!
They'll find it kinda wierd with the start button missing (I
co\ustomised it to mimic windows tho) so i thought this can be used as
a tool if we can make a beautiful documentation that shows what are
analogous to windows, how to use them, where to get more help, let
them know about fsm and stuff. So I initiated this git repo here to
make HTML doc for the same, it is at http://github.com/ucafe.git you
can pull/push from and to it with an ssh key.
''Is there anything that will let you set an HTML file as the desktop
background in ubuntu?''

Hi,
These are my views..i have very high respect for some people in certain
ngos . I am also not doing this naive discount of ngos..not for profit
companies..
I am saying this after understanding the significant contributions and
struggles different ngos / not for profit companies / political parties
have made to struggle in free software..and other political and social
struggles...
However its very clear to me that the free software movement is not a
single 'foundation' or 'ngo' or 'non profit company' or a single
'party' - but all of them can be part of the movement
many times - they democratically elect their leaders rather than by
nomination : Gandhi was not nominated into leadership of the freedom
movement nor was Medha Patkar ...
I remeber what the rural journalist P Sainath said .. "Freedom Struggle
in India didnt happen because of NGOs"
Details below.
-S
Freedom Struggle of India - Is a mass movement : it had everybody in the
country in it...from slum dwellers, village folks, artists,
intellectuals, teachers , students..the Dalit movement in India in the
last decade - is a mass movement..The Narmada Bachao Andolan - is a mass
movement ..
- Mass movements have a sort of democratic structure, large
number of people from different walks of life participate - and ellivate
their consciousness - it represents some sort of churing of the society
- and cannot be appropriated by one party, one company , one
organisation , one ngo .....
A single non-profit company or NGO or political party is definitely not
a mass movement.....though they contribute to it..
http://www.orissadiary.com/inerview/Sainath.asp
OD : As a rural journalist what are your views on N.G.Os and
development?
P. Sainath : You can not find a single body called NGO, because there
are many. The word NGO does not represent any single organization or
entity; its amourphous. There are many good NGOs who are highly
responsible for their people and there are some NGOs who are lagging on
this regard.
OD : But on an average what is your view about them?
P. Sainath : On average I will say that many of them are not working
sincerely. There are bad people in good NGOs and good people in Bad NGOs
and bad people in bad NGOs too. But some of them are working in
important areas and fields and potential is there to work. But I would
like to see that if the NGOs, in stead of working on behalf of people,
promote the spirit of self dependence among people, then its more an
effective way.
In reference to http://www.hindu.com/2008/11/19/stories/2008111956231000.htm
